Empowering Future Designers: The Ruth E. Carter Masterclass
In a significant move to broaden access to creative education, Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design (PLC Detroit) has launched an innovative digital learning program titled the "PLC Detroit x adidas x Ruth E. Carter Costume Design program." Announced on April 3, 2026, this course, offered free of charge, is a transformative venture that aims to democratize design education for aspiring creatives around the globe.
A Unique Collaboration
This collaboration stems from the initial relationship built between the college and Ruth E. Carter, the iconic two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer. Dr. D'Wayne Edwards, president of PLC Detroit, mentioned that their partnership began with an inspiring masterclass where Carter guided students in creating dresses for her prestigious award ceremonies. In 2025, their collaboration deepened with the Ruth E. Carter Apparel Creation STU/DEO by adidas program. Now, through the ePLC platform, PLC Detroit is extending an invitation to budding artists worldwide to glean insights from Carter’s illustrious career.
Insights into Afrofuturism
The four-part video course led by Carter provides a deep dive into storytelling through costume design, with a special emphasis on her approach to Afrofuturism. This visionary perspective blends cultural influences, imaginative concepts, and narrative elements to showcase how costume design can shape character and world-building in stories. In Carter’s words, "Afrofuturism is all about expanding our imagination—about honoring our past while designing the future."
The course encapsulates vital themes such as research, cultural respect, and constant evolution in one’s craft—key components for any storyteller or designer. By encouraging creativity, PLC Detroit hopes to empower the next generation of artists to fully realize and express their visions.
Course Curriculum and Learning Objectives
Participants will engage with four comprehensive video modules each focusing on Carter's unique creative methodologies—covering essential areas like character development, research techniques, visual storytelling, and strategic problem-solving. Each module is enriched by Carter's lifetime of experience, which includes over 70 credits spanning film, television, and theater.
These learning segments aim to equip students with practical tools necessary for translating abstract ideas into captivating visual stories, bolstering their creative decision-making, and enhancing their understanding of how narrative influences both professional paths and individual voices across diverse artistic disciplines.
Impactful Contributions to Cinema
Ruth E. Carter’s influence on cinema is truly monumental. Her work on iconic films like "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" has not only secured her multiple accolades but has also redefined how storytelling is conveyed through costume design. Recognized for her meticulous attention to cultural authenticity, she has crafted unforgettable visual narratives in films such as "Malcolm X" and more recently, "Sinners," which gained a historic 16 Oscar nominations.
With her exceptional ability to intertwine culture with design, Carter has collaborated with renowned directors like Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, Ava DuVernay, and Ryan Coogler, demonstrating her transformative impact on character and cinematic world-building.
Becoming the first Black individual to win an Academy Award for Best Costume Design—and later the first Black woman with multiple wins—Carter has also become a beacon of inspiration, particularly following her nomination for "Sinners," making her the most-nominated Black woman in Academy Awards history.
A Global Initiative for Creative Education
The partnership between PLC Detroit and Ruth E. Carter epitomizes the college's commitment to innovation and industry collaboration in the pursuit of culturally conscious creativity. By making this masterclass available on the ePLC platform, they are entering a new era of inclusive digital arts education.
