Hyundai Marks 40 Years of Innovation and Commitment in the U.S. Auto Market

Hyundai Celebrates 40 Years in the U.S.

In 2026, Hyundai Motor America proudly commemorates four decades since its inaugural vehicle sale in the United States, which was a Hyundai Excel on February 19, 1986. This milestone not only marks significant progress in the automotive industry but also showcases the evolution of a brand that has become synonymous with quality, innovation, and cutting-edge design.

From its modest beginnings, Hyundai has expanded substantially, growing from just 161 dealerships to over 855 across the nation. In 2025, the company achieved a sales milestone with over 900,000 vehicles sold, bringing its total to more than 17 million vehicles delivered to American customers over the years.

Jose Munoz, the president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, reflected on this journey, stating, "Forty years ago, Hyundai came to the U.S. to be part of the American dream. In America's 250th year, we're proud to be helping so many families realize their American Dream." Munoz added that the company’s future is tied closely to its commitment to safety, affordability, and sustainability in mobility.

In an industry marked by rapid technological advancements, Hyundai has consistently pushed the envelope in terms of product offerings. The company's diverse lineup now includes an array of sedans, SUVs, and an impressive range of electrified vehicles. This transformation has seen models like the Sonata, Elantra, Venue, and numerous electric variants, including the highly anticipated IONIQ 9, which is at the forefront of Hyundai’s electrification strategy.

Hyundai's investment in the U.S. market is equally impressive. Since 1986, Hyundai Motor Company has invested a remarkable $20.5 billion in the country, supporting over 570,000 jobs. With an additional $26 billion slated for investment by 2028, Hyundai is positioning itself as a key player in the U.S. automotive landscape. Recent projects, such as the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, opened in 2025, underscore the commitment to advancing electric vehicle production and clean energy technology.

Safety and customer confidence remain at the core of Hyundai's mission. Since 1998, the company has offered an industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, signifying a strong commitment to quality. Programs such as Hyundai Assurance Job Loss Protection further strengthen trust in the brand, along with the Hyundai Owner Assurance program, which provides comprehensive coverage and roadside assistance.

Hyundai's commitment to safety is reflected in its industry accolades. The company has earned more IIHS Top Safety Awards than any other brand, showcasing its dedication to engineering excellence. With numerous Hyundai models achieving TOP SAFETY PICK+ ratings, the company continues to prioritize innovations in safety technology, ensuring that customers feel secure on the road.

Looking to the future, Hyundai's vision extends to redefining mobility through electrification and sustainability. The launch of battery electric vehicles on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) demonstrates the company’s aim to lead in the EV sector, while advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology highlight Hyundai's commitment to zero-emission vehicles.

Moreover, Hyundai is actively integrating cutting-edge technologies into its vehicles, providing features such as Lane Following Assist and autonomous-driving capabilities, thus enhancing the overall driving experience with connected-car systems.

As part of its social responsibility initiatives, Hyundai has long supported communities through programs like Hyundai Hope on Wheels, which aims to combat pediatric cancer and has raised over $277 million since its inception in 1998. Hyundai hopes to make a positive impact on community health, safety, and well-being through various volunteer efforts and partnerships.

As it moves forward into the next chapter, Hyundai’s dedication to making advanced and sustainable mobility accessible remains unwavering. With plans for continued investments in innovative technology and green manufacturing practice, Hyundai is set to push the boundaries of what is possible in the automotive industry. The journey that began 40 years ago is just the beginning for Hyundai, as it continues to pave the way for the future of mobility in America.
