The Shanghai Museum Unveils a Grand Exhibition on Ancient American Civilizations

A Grand Display of Ancient Cultures

The Shanghai Museum is set to captivate audiences with its upcoming exhibition, "On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas," which will run from July 9, 2026, to November 14, 2027. This remarkable showcase explores the artistic, cultural, and spiritual traditions of civilizations that flourished in Central and South America, featuring nearly 3,000 artifacts collected from Mexico and Peru.

Organized in collaboration with prominent museums and cultural institutions from both countries, the exhibition presents 1,129 sets of objects that highlight the most significant achievements of ancient American societies. Following the successful prior exhibition entitled “At the Top of the Pyramid,” this new event promises to offer visitors an unprecedented glimpse into the rich historical tapestry of the Americas.

Exhibition Overview

Covering more than 7,000 square meters, the exhibition is divided into two complementary sections focusing on the history, artistic traditions, and material cultures of both Mexico and Peru.

Sacred Spaces: The Civilizations of Ancient Mexico

The first part, titled "Sacred Spaces: The Civilizations of Ancient Mexico," delves into the interconnections between belief systems, political authority, and artistic production. This section will explore the cosmological frameworks that shaped ancient Mesoamerican societies. Visitors will encounter monumental works, ritual objects, and everyday items that evoke the intellectual and cultural universe of these civilizations.

Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru

The second section, "Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru," represents not only the largest exhibition ever held in China about Andean civilizations but also one of the most significant international itinerant exhibitions dedicated to Peruvian gold and silver art objects. This part of the exhibition traces the evolution of societies throughout the Andes while illuminating the artistic achievements of the region and examining the social, political, and spiritual systems that shaped these ancient cultures.

A Transformative Experience

During the entire duration of the exhibition, the Shanghai Museum will be wholly dedicated to this event. Inspired by the symbolic concept of the World Tree, the interior design incorporates visual references from ancient American civilizations, including motifs such as corn, jaguars, feathered serpents, and pyramids. The museum will transform into an immersive space of 10,000 square meters, allowing visitors to enter a vivid representation of ancient landscapes, beginning with a walk through a cornfield.

Educational installations at the entrances to the galleries will provide insights into the landscapes, beliefs, and traditions of ancient America, enriching the visitor experience.

Starting June 1, 2026, international visitors can purchase timed tickets via Trip.com (identification required) or at the museum itself situated at People’s Square in Shanghai.

This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to engage with the profound cultural legacy of the Americas, connecting the past with the present and highlighting the rich tapestry of human history. Don't miss your chance to witness this extraordinary event that celebrates the vibrancy and complexity of ancient civilizations.
