Hammock's Recent Survey on WSUS Use Highlights Migration Trends and Challenges

Understanding the Current State of WSUS and Windows Update Management

In September 2025, Hammock, a Tokyo-based software company, conducted a survey across 500 IT departments to assess the current utilization of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and the challenges of Windows update management. The purpose of this public release is to summarize the current scenario for year-end evaluation, assisting companies in planning for the upcoming year's operational strategies.

Background of the Survey

The management of Windows device updates has become an essential foundation in enhancing the security and stability of corporate operations. With the sophistication of cyberattacks increasing, the risks of exploitation through vulnerabilities have escalated, making the effective management of Operating System (OS) and application updates more crucial than ever.

However, many companies have relied on WSUS for these updates, which has now been officially discontinued. This situation necessitates urgent reviews of existing setups and the exploration of alternative solutions. Despite this, feedback from the field indicates that many are unaware of the discontinuation or lack clarity in transitioning strategies. Therefore, Hammock’s study aims to illuminate the current state and future trends by examining WSUS usage, intentions for migration, and related challenges.

Survey Overview

The survey, which focused on WSUS and Windows update management, was carried out using an online self-administered questionnaire tool, Freeasy, on September 5, 2025, with a total of 500 respondents.

Note: The survey results may not total 100% due to rounding at the second decimal place. Any citations or reproductions of this survey should credit Hammock Corporation with the link: Hammock News Release.

Summary of Findings

  • - Approximately 40% were unaware of WSUS discontinuation.
  • - Update management methods are diversifying, with around 20% still using WSUS.
  • - Nearly 70% are considering migration away from WSUS.
  • - Microsoft Intune is the most considered alternative for update management, reflecting a shift towards cloud-based solutions.
  • - Adoption of management tools covering multiple areas is on the rise.

Details of Survey Results

Awareness of WSUS Discontinuation

When asked about awareness of WSUS's discontinuation, only 30% of respondents acknowledged being fully informed, while 24% were aware of the announcement without specifics, and 4.6% had recently learned of it. Alarmingly, 41.2% admitted they were unaware of it entirely, indicating a significant gap in awareness regarding this pivotal change.

Diversification in Update Management

Respondents were asked, “How is your organization currently managing Windows device updates?” Approximately 20.6% manage their updates through WSUS, 17.6% use Microsoft Intune or similar Mobile Device Management tools, 8.0% employ SCCM for patch distribution, and 6.0% utilize third-party patch management tools.

Migration Considerations

Regarding post-WSUS operational strategies, 42.7% indicated they are already transitioning to alternate methods, while 26.2% plan to make changes within the next year. Notably, 18.5% intend to continue using WSUS for the time being, and 12.6% have yet to decide, showing a growing awareness but a lack of definitive action among some organizations.

Interest in Alternative Solutions

When exploring potential replacement options for WSUS, 78.9% of respondents indicated they would consider Microsoft Intune for update management. Other alternatives gaining traction include third-party patch management tools (43.7%) and SCCM (38.0%). Furthermore, there’s a noted interest in Azure Autopatch, with 35.2% showing acute interest in cloud-based management approaches.

Emerging Management Tools

In terms of management tools being evaluated or already in use, the majority answered that they were considering patch management tools (31.0%) or IT asset management tools (28.7%). Unified endpoint management tools also garnered interest (24.1%), highlighting a trend towards integrated management strategies that address various operational areas.

Conclusion

This survey reveals that while awareness of WSUS's discontinuation is insufficient, there is a significant movement towards alternative update management solutions. With nearly 70% of respondents considering migration, clarity about the next steps is paramount. Microsoft Intune is leading the charge as businesses shift from on-premises operations to cloud management solutions, reflecting a pivotal moment in update management strategies. The increasing interest in tools that encompass multiple management domains speaks to the evolving needs of companies striving for efficient, secure, and streamlined operations.

For instance, Hammock's own solution, AssetView Cloud +, offers a cloud-based approach to PC update management without relying on WSUS. Its design allows for precise scheduling and execution conditions, minimizing operational disruptions during updates.
