California Baptist University Receives Generous Botanical Garden Donation
In a move that underscores the spirit of community philanthropy, a local couple, Frank and Lucy Heyming, has generously donated nearly five acres of land, featuring a 6,300-square-foot home along with a stunning botanical garden, to California Baptist University (CBU). This remarkable act of kindness translates to a value of approximately $5.3 million.
Located just a few blocks away from CBU's main campus, the property includes a residence, a barn, a swimming pool, and tennis/pickleball courts, making it an ideal addition to the university’s resources. Frank Heyming remarked, "Many top universities have their own botanical gardens, and we thought it made perfect sense for CBU to have one, especially given its proximity."
The Heymings acquired this property in 1995, beginning with a landscape that featured eucalyptus and palm trees but lacked diversity. In the following year, they embarked on a mission to rejuvenate the land, replacing a dead orchard with over 80 varieties of citrus and stone fruit trees. The couple's vision gradually expanded; starting from a simple idea of adding a fountain, they drew inspiration from their travels and their love of gardening. By 2004, the Heymings became certified master gardeners.
Today, the Grand Arbor garden is a vibrant showcase, featuring themed zones that represent various aspects of nature, including cactus and succulent gardens, a butterfly habitat, and even areas that celebrate the four seasons. The garden also includes a serene Zen area, a vegetable garden, and a picturesque stream. Notably, some of Frank's sculptures adorn the garden, reflecting his passion for art, which he pursued more after retiring from a successful career in real estate in 2012.
Dr. Ronald L. Ellis, president of CBU, expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Heymings, stating, "Their dedication to philanthropy and the community is truly inspiring. Their contributions will impact Riverside for generations to come."
The history of the house itself adds depth to this remarkable donation. Originally built in 1916 by attorney and polo player, Alvin Untermyer, the property has undergone various transformations and ownership changes over the decades. It was expanded in 1929 by Earle and Vida Halliburton to support their growing family of five children. Additionally, the building has served various roles throughout its life, including as a nursing home.
Within the botanical garden, the Heymings have cultivated 345 trees representing 151 different varieties. Their commitment to making the garden a space for community enjoyment has also led them to establish walking paths for neighbors and visitors to explore the beauty of nature that they have lovingly created. Lucy shared, "People often remark on how peaceful it feels. I believe offering that tranquility to the community is something divine. Everyone needs a connection to nature."
In addition to the significant land donation, the couple has previously sold two other properties to CBU at below-market rates, facilitating an endowment gift that has grown to create $1.2 million in funding to support the ongoing maintenance and development of the garden.
While CBU is still exploring the best ways to utilize the entirety of the property, one thing is certain—the Heymings' botanical garden will serve as a lasting gift to the community and enrich the university’s mission for many years to come. Paul Eldridge, vice president for University Advancement, highlighted the couple’s unyielding support stating, "Frank and Lucy are truly remarkable individuals whose legacy will benefit countless lives."
Frank, known for his extensive involvement in local partnerships, community organizations, and initiatives, continues to impact the Riverside area positively. As a UCR alum, he remains connected with his local community, often giving back through various channels. Lucy, an accomplished artist and master gardener, shares in this commitment alongside him. Together, they celebrate family life with their six children and 14 grandchildren, continuing to inspire everyone around them.
California Baptist University, founded in 1950, stands as a premier Christian institution on the west coast, offering a diverse array of programs and maintaining its commitment to higher education and service to the community. With this significant donation from the Heymings, CBU marks yet another step forward in expanding its community engagement and educational resources for future generations.
