California Water Environment Association Honors Outstanding Wastewater Treatment Facilities

Celebrating Excellence in Wastewater Treatment

On May 28, 2025, the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) announced the recipients of their prestigious awards at the annual ceremony held in Palm Springs, California. This year, fifteen organizations were recognized for their exceptional work in protecting and improving California's water resources, a critical need in the face of ongoing environmental challenges.

A Legacy of Excellence

The CWEA has a rich history, with its awards program dating back nearly a century. Among this year’s winners, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District was highlighted for their large collection systems, while the City of Huntington Beach earned accolades in the medium category. The Leucadia Wastewater District was recognized for their small collection systems.

In the Plant of the Year category, the Encina Wastewater Authority stood out among large treatment facilities for its efficiency, while Oro Loma Sanitary District and Olivenhain Municipal Water District were named winners in the medium and small categories, respectively.

Safety was another focal point of recognition, with the Victorville Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant, Central Marin Sanitation Agency, and Orange County Sanitation District receiving awards based on employee count.

Additionally, the awards ceremony celebrated innovative contributions such as the Community Engagement and Outreach Project of the Year, recognizing initiatives that enhance public understanding and involvement in water management. The Go With the Flow project from Central Contra Costa Sanitary District and the California Native Plant Seed Library by Vallecitos Water District illustrated the importance of community in environmental stewardship.
