Okayama University Hospital Expands Maternal-Fetal Intensive Care
On June 5, 2025, Okayama University Hospital, located in Okayama City, received designation as a Comprehensive Perinatal Mother-Child Medical Center from Okayama Prefecture. This significant advancement follows the completion of a renovation that added six beds to the Maternal-Fetal Intensive Care Unit (MFICU), enhancing the hospital's capacity to care for high-risk pregnancies and newborns with severe congenital diseases.
Background of the Expansion
The hospital has long served as a Regional Perinatal Mother-Child Medical Center, catering to pregnant women dealing with severe complications and newborns facing risks due to premature birth or severe congenital disorders. As a facility equipped with various specialized departments, the growing need for emergency care for pregnant women and newborns necessitated an expansion of its services.
In September 2024, the hospital expanded its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by adding 12 beds and its Growing Care Unit (GCU) with another 12 beds. This strategic progression enabled the hospital to better manage patient inflow and provide comprehensive care.
Introduction of the MFICU
The newly established MFICU is designed for cases requiring special monitoring and treatment for both mother and fetus. It caters to high-risk pregnancies that may involve conditions such as preeclampsia, premature labor, multiple pregnancies, stunted fetal growth, bleeding, and uterine abnormalities.
In the MFICU, patients will undergo extensive monitoring, including blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory functions of the mother, alongside fetal heart rate monitoring. Treatment involves preventative measures against premature delivery through intravenous therapies and medication. The facility is also equipped to prepare for emergency circumstances, such as urgent cesarean sections if necessary.
Designation as a Comprehensive Center
Following the expansion of the NICU, GCU, and the establishment of the MFICU, Okayama University Hospital was officially designated as a Comprehensive Perinatal Mother-Child Medical Center on June 1, 2025. The fourth floor of the hospital will serve as the dedicated area for the new center, providing an integrated approach to perinatal healthcare.
Going forward, the hospital aims to work closely with local medical institutions to reinforce its perinatal care system. Additionally, there will be a focus on the training of specialized medical professionals in perinatal medicine, striving for the creation of sustainable perinatal healthcare services in the region.
Okayama University Hospital is the third medical facility in Okayama Prefecture designated as a Comprehensive Perinatal Mother-Child Medical Center, joining Kurashiki Central Hospital and Okayama Medical Center, which received their respective designations in 2000 and 2005.
This development in maternal-fetal care underscores Okayama University Hospital's commitment to providing high-quality healthcare and responding to local healthcare needs effectively.
