About the Speaker
Professor Tsutomu Watanabe
As the founder, director, and research advisor at Nowcast, Professor Watanabe has extensive experience in macroeconomics, particularly in price levels and monetary policy. His remarkable career includes working as a senior economist at the Bank of Japan from 1982 to 1999 before later holding positions as an associate and full professor at Hitotsubashi University and as a professor at the University of Tokyo until 2025.
His impressive academic credentials include guest positions at prestigious universities such as Kyoto University, Bocconi University, and Columbia University. After obtaining a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1992, he published over 70 peer-reviewed papers and authored numerous influential books, including the award-winning “What is Price?” and “The Mystery of Global Inflation.”
In addition to his academic endeavors, Professor Watanabe has led various research projects aimed at unraveling the dynamics of price fluctuations in the Japanese economy, with a particular focus on integrating micro and macro approaches. Currently, he is the principal investigator for a project analyzing the causes and consequences of long-term deflation.
