Obsidian Sensors Selected for U.S. Army DUTCH Program
In a recent announcement, Obsidian Sensors has secured funding under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III for its project within the DUTCH Initiative, a program focused on enhancing thermal imaging capabilities for the U.S. Army. This initiative, titled Delivering Unmatched Thermal Capability Hastened, is backed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Critical Technologies and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) C5ISR Center.
Objectives and Innovations
The primary goals of the DUTCH program are to lower costs and scale up the production of high-resolution thermal imaging systems while maintaining high performance. Obsidian Sensors is committed to providing thermal cameras at affordable prices, leveraging their innovative manufacturing process known as the Large Area MEMS Platform (LAMP).
The LAMP approach represents a substantial shift from traditional thermal imaging manufacturing methodologies. Instead of utilizing expensive silicon wafers to create Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) thermal sensors, Obsidian manufactures its proprietary MEMS structures on significantly larger glass substrates. These substrates are approximately twenty times larger than conventional silicon wafers, which allows for cost savings and efficiency gains by using technology similar to that of the display industry.
Advancements in Thermal Imaging
Thanks to its novel manufacturing strategy, Obsidian is already delivering VGA-resolution thermal cameras that align with the pricing strategies defined under the Army's Drone Dominance program. What's more, the company anticipates the rollout of higher-resolution models—specifically SVGA by the end of this year and SXGA in 2027.
John Hong, the co-founder and CEO of Obsidian Sensors, emphasized the progress made in the thermal imaging sector over the last thirty years in terms of performance and resolution. However, he noted that the industry has become entrenched in a high-cost production model. "Our aim was to change that narrative, and we've succeeded, especially at a time when it's vitally supportive of the Drone Dominance program with our innovations promising much lower costs than current market offerings."
Future Implications
The developments of Obsidian Sensors not only mark a significant advance for the DUTCH program but also represent an essential step toward establishing affordable thermal imaging technology as the industry standard. Tallis Chang, co-founder and COO, further highlighted that the establishment of a new packaging factory in San Diego would lay the groundwork for making cost-effective thermal imaging the norm rather than the exception.
This shift in thermal camera manufacturing could have substantial implications, extending beyond military applications to commercial sectors. Potential future deployments could include uncrewed aerial systems, loitering munitions, and a variety of austere platforms that require reliable and accessible thermal imaging.
