Medtronic and Michael J. Fox Foundation Expand Awareness of Parkinson's Deep Brain Stimulation Treatment

Medtronic and Michael J. Fox Foundation Join Forces for Parkinson's Awareness

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Medtronic plc and The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) have unveiled a new educational initiative focused on enhancing the understanding of deep brain stimulation (DBS). This effort aims to equip individuals living with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers with essential information about this established treatment method.

Currently, approximately 6 million people worldwide are affected by Parkinson's disease (PD), a number projected to double by 2040. Despite the long-standing use of DBS—nearly three decades—many individuals remain unaware of its benefits. Medtronic and MJFF are determined to bridge this knowledge gap, enabling patients and their families to make informed decisions regarding their treatment options.

Sohini Chowdhury, MJFF's Chief Program Officer, emphasized the importance of partnerships in advancing knowledge and support for individuals dealing with Parkinson’s. "Our urgent mission is to accelerate a cure for Parkinson's by advancing the most promising research. Partnerships with industry help us do more for people and families by expanding access to clear, practical resources that support informed decisions and meaningful participation in our mission," she stated.

Through this initiative, robust educational materials will be created, aiming to provide insights into the working of DBS and relevant scientific advancements. Medtronic has a long-standing history in supporting DBS therapy and serves over 200,000 individuals with movement disorders worldwide. The company introduced the first FDA-approved adaptive DBS system for Parkinson's in 2025, significantly advancing treatment options.

Accessible Resources for Patients

With Medtronic's backing, MJFF plans to provide a wealth of educational resources covering the basics of DBS, including its advantages, potential risks, surgical preparation, and life adjustment post-implantation. An online hub, practical guides, and interactive webinars will be compiled to facilitate access to trustworthy information on this crucial treatment.
