Toyo Seikan Group Partners with TNO for Innovative Solar Technology Development

Toyo Seikan Group Collaborates with TNO for Solar Innovation

In an exciting development, Toyo Seikan Group Holdings, based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has recently been designated as a technology development partner by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). This strategic partnership highlights their ongoing collaboration on performance assessments of functional materials under Toyo Seikan's brand, MiraNeo®. The collaboration aims to contribute significantly to the MC2.0 Project, focusing on mass customization for integrated solar power systems across Europe.

Through this partnership, both organizations will work together to commercialize next-generation flexible solar panels, including high-performance perovskite solar cells, optimized for cost-effectiveness across the European market.

Role of Toyo Seikan in the MC2.0 Project

As a key player in the MC2.0 Project, Toyo Seikan will leverage its MiraNeo® product lineup to enhance the design and manufacturing efficiency of solar panel products. This involves joint development initiatives with TNO to create optimal products that meet the project's quality performance criteria. For instance, one of the primary focuses will be on developing patterned back sheets for solar panels. These innovative sheets come with built-in conductive patterns that enhance electrical efficiency while reducing the need for additional components like electrodes, resulting in lighter and more flexible designs and a reduction in production costs.

In addition to the back sheets, Toyo Seikan will also work on developing front sheets to protect solar cells from environmental factors like rain and UV exposure, as well as edge sealing materials that prevent moisture ingress, thereby extending the lifespan of the panels. These advancements are critical in reinforcing the durability and functionality of modern solar technology.

About TNO and the Importance of the MC2.0 Project

TNO is one of Europe’s largest independent applied research institutions, established by the Dutch Parliament. Its vast array of research initiatives is internationally acclaimed, focusing on numerous fields, from sustainable energy solutions to innovative product development. The MC2.0 Project, spearheaded by TNO, aims to revolutionize mass customization for solar panel systems in Europe. It strives to produce customized products tailored to individual customer needs with high productivity and low costs. The ultimate goal is to establish a manufacturing framework by 2026 that incorporates flexible and automated production lines, thus facilitating bulk production of customized solar solutions, including next-generation perovskite solar panels.

The MC2.0 Project represents a substantial leap toward improving the cost performance of solar power technologies across Europe, heralding a new era in renewable energy solutions.
