Become a Star Guide: The 8th Star Sommelier Certification Course

The 8th Star Sommelier Certification Course is set to take place from October 10th (Saturday) to October 12th (Monday), 2026. This special certification program, designed for astronomy enthusiasts, will be held at the University Seminar House in Hachioji, Tokyo, offering participants a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of stars through a combination of lectures and practical applications over two nights and three days.

Starting today, August 24th, applications are being accepted until September 23rd at 23:59. Successful candidates will be notified of the selection results on September 25th. This course is not just a classroom experience; it is geared towards those who want to become effective star guides, much like sommeliers who select exquisite wines, this course empowers individuals to share the joys of the night sky with others.

Course Overview

During the 2-night, 3-day intensive course, participants will delve into essential knowledge and skills necessary to act as a 'Star Guide' or Star Sommelier. This encompasses learning how to operate telescopes and binoculars for stargazing and providing engaging explanations about celestial phenomena.

The course culminates in acquiring a certification as a 'Novice Star Guide', which requires attendance and a passing grade on an assigned report. To achieve the full 'Star Guide' certification, participants must successfully complete a practical test and submit additional reports after the course concludes. This structured certification system has been developed to ensure that participants have the required knowledge to confidently lead stargazing events and share the magic of the universe.

The two levels of certification are as follows:
  • - Novice Star Guide: At this stage, participants gain fundamental knowledge and skills through the course. They must complete basic subjects and several elective courses to become a Novice Star Guide.
  • - Star Guide: Building upon the basic knowledge obtained, participants will gain experience and deepen their understanding, enabling them to organize and execute stargazing events effectively.
