Business Leaders Confront Rising Economic Uncertainty and Strategic Shifts in 2026

Analyzing Declines in C-Suite Confidence Amid Economic Changes

The landscape for business leaders has markedly changed in 2026, and a new study by Sentry Insurance unveils a startling shift in the mindset of C-suite executives across the United States. With ongoing economic turbulence, characterized by fluctuations in trade policies and geopolitical tensions, these leaders are increasingly apprehensive about navigating their firms through uncertain waters.

Declining Confidence Levels

Recent findings indicate that as of August 2026, 82% of U.S. executives report a heightened fear regarding their business's future compared to the previous year. This sentiment mirrors a broader trend where 90% of leaders from small businesses, particularly those with 10-49 employees, feel an exacerbated level of uncertainty. These sentiments reflect a significant 21-percentage point increase from earlier in the year, showcasing how recent events have rapidly intensified their concerns.

Macro Environmental Challenges

The obstacles faced are multifaceted. Key areas of concern have evolved dramatically:

  • - Supply chain and logistics issues saw a sharp rise in concern, now reflecting 62% of executives' worries, a 17-point increase.
  • - Tariffs and trade uncertainties jumped to 52%, rising by 13 points.
  • - Labor shortages have become another significant issue, shared by 49% of executives, an increase of 11 percentage points.

These statistics underscore how intertwined and impactful macro-level influences can reshape corporate strategy and outlook.

Strategic Adjustments Necessary

The current climate has forced a majority of executives—98%—to reconsider their long-term planning and risk management frameworks. This evolving adaptation is evident as 70% shorten planning horizons and 61% develop additional contingencies to address potential crises. Jeff Cole, Assistant Vice President of National Accounts at Sentry, notes that these changes reflect not only a list of threats but also the speed with which those threats can emerge and evolve, urging leaders to cultivate a more flexible approach.

“Adapting to today’s fast-paced risks means maintaining agility in decision-making. This allows organizations to ponder various potential outcomes and helps them prepare for the unexpected,” Cole explains.

The Challenges Facing Small Businesses

Smaller businesses are particularly vulnerable. Many owners lament their lack of resources to absorb unforeseen disruptions. A staggering 65% of executives from small organizations have reported feeling the adverse impacts from geopolitical tensions, with 95% expressing difficulty in adapting to rapidly changing environments.

Brett Hoopingarner, National Sales Director of Sentry's Direct Writer and Life Annuities division, emphasizes that resilience is not solely based on size but on agility. He asserts that it is crucial for businesses, regardless of scale, to evaluate risks proactively and collaborate with their advisors for better decision-making amid instability.

Survey Methodology

The insights from this report stem from a comprehensive survey conducted by Wakefield Research, which included input from 625 U.S. executives who supervise at least 10 employees. This list of respondents encompasses diverse roles, including CEOs, CFOs, and Chief Risk Officers (CROs).
