This investigation targeted 350 individuals who own vacant properties, gathering insights on their experiences with troubles and risks linked to their homes. The survey was conducted from July 9 to July 10, 2025, aiming to unveil the prevalent issues facing owners of empty homes.

Frequency of Maintenance


Among the respondents, 59.3% reported that they undertake maintenance on their vacant properties at least once a month. Surprisingly, nearly 40% of owners tend to neglect their homes, with more than 30% performing upkeep less frequently than every two months. This neglect raises concerns about the condition of these properties, leading to a potential increase in issues such as property damage and pest infestations.

Common Maintenance Activities


When asked about the types of maintenance they conduct, owners indicated that they primarily focus on ventilation (58.1%), tending to gardens (57.2%), and cleaning (53.9%). These activities reflect a generally reactive approach to property management, addressing visible issues rather than long-term preventative measures.

Experienced Troubles


The survey findings indicated that 23.7% of owners have encountered troubles with their vacant properties. The most reported issue relates to gardening and landscaping, accounting for 26.5% of the responses. Complaints from neighbors concerning overgrown plants and unkempt yards are common, highlighting the impact of inadequate maintenance on community relations.

In addition, concerns about trespassing and burglary (16.9%) and damage to property (16.8%) illustrate the rising threats as properties age without proper oversight. Complaints from neighbors, pest issues, and illegal dumping also pose significant challenges, with 12% of owners expressing frustrations in these areas.

Financial and Safety Risks


Perhaps the most alarming insight from the survey is the emotional and financial burdens that vacant home ownership entails. A staggering 32.9% of owners reported that the ongoing property tax presents a considerable concern. Other financial stressors include maintenance efforts (19.7%) and the potential costs of demolition or renovation (17.7%). Despite acknowledging risks such as burglary or arson (12.9% and 10.9%, respectively), it appears that most owners view these scenarios as future possibilities rather than immediate threats.

The emotional strain caused by ownership is substantial, with over 80% of owners indicating that they have grappled with some form of problem related to their vacant properties. Alarmingly, 40% believe their empty houses represent liabilities rather than assets.
