Local Families Make a Big Impact by Packing School Supplies for Children in Need
As the summer season draws to a close, many families are busy gearing up for back-to-school shopping. However, some families are taking this opportunity to make a difference. They are not merely picking up items for their own children, but also gathering essential school supplies and personal care items to fill shoeboxes meant for children in need across the globe.
These heartfelt gifts are organized through the
Operation Christmas Child initiative, which aims to deliver joy and practical help to boys and girls in more than 100 countries. Many children around the world lack even the most basic school supplies—like notebooks, pencils, and crayons—as these items are often considered luxuries beyond their reach.
Real Stories of Change
The impact of a simple shoebox gift is profound, as shown by the story of George Onyango from Kenya. Before he received a shoebox, George faced immense challenges at school. His family simply could not afford school supplies, forcing him to resort to using his fingers to do assignments in the dirt. Compounding the struggles, classmates sometimes mocked him due to his lack of supplies, making a challenging situation even more harrowing.
However, everything changed when George opened his shoebox from Operation Christmas Child. Inside, he discovered a notebook and a set of pencils—items he longed for but had never been able to use. This seemingly modest gift was more than just supplies; it became a beacon of hope and ignited a deeper understanding of God's love and care in George's life.
How to Contribute
This initiative highlights not just the importance of education, but also the power of community support. As National Collection Week approaches—from November 16 to 23—participants are encouraged to fill shoeboxes with gifts that include school supplies, fun toys, and personal care items. Each box costs $10 to ship, and donors can track their box’s journey through the online program “Follow Your Box.” For added convenience, families can also opt for building an online shoebox, selecting items designed for a specific child’s age and gender through the Samaritans Purse website.
Donations can be made via
SamaritansPurse.org/OCC and gifts can be selected up until just before the collection week.
Join the Movement
Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, aims to show God's love in a tangible way to vulnerable children worldwide. Since its inception in 1993, the initiative has gifted over 244 million shoeboxes to children in more than 175 countries and territories, serving as a reminder that kindness knows no borders and that together, we can reach children who feel forgotten.
By getting involved in this campaign, families can not only equip children with the necessary tools for education but also inspire them to dream and hope for a better future, reinforcing the notion that they are not alone. For all those looking to make a meaningful contribution, this initiative is a perfect avenue to share love, support, and encouragement with children around the world.
