Arizona Landscape Architects Transform Public Spaces for Park(ing) Day 2025



On September 19, 2025, the Arizona Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (AZASLA) will take part in a global initiative aimed at enhancing public spaces by turning parking spots into vibrant, community-oriented areas. This event, known as Park(ing) Day, aims to advocate for safer, greener, and more accessible urban environments. The installations will be located in Downtown Phoenix on Taylor Street between 1st and 2nd Streets, as well as in Tucson on University Blvd at 800 E University Blvd.

The movement encourages individuals and organizations around the world to rethink the purpose of urban space. Historically, over 70% of city street space is occupied by private vehicle storage, leaving minimal room for open areas accessible to the public. Park(ing) Day challenges this norm by converting these often-overlooked spaces into places for play, creativity, and community interaction.

The Power of Park(ing) Day

Originally conceived in San Francisco in 2005 by the Rebar art and design collective, Park(ing) Day has grown from a local event into a global phenomenon.
