Wang Zhiyu's Groundbreaking Exhibition 'Lay Eggs' Starts This May

Wang Zhiyu's 'Lay Eggs' Exhibition

Starting on May 10, 2025, GALLERY ROOM・A in Asakusa will host a significant solo exhibition titled 'Lay Eggs' by the talented artist Wang Zhiyu. This exhibition is organized by The Chain Museum, a prominent art communication platform operating under ArtSticker, a commercial gallery that aims to curate engaging encounters with art.

The pieces showcased in this exhibition will be available exclusively through ArtSticker, with a limited quantity set for sale based on a first-come, first-served basis commencing at 8 AM on the opening day. Art enthusiasts may inquire for a price list prior to the exhibition period for early access to the available works.

Exhibition Overview

Wang Zhiyu draws inspiration from diverse themes including occultism, natural sciences, and personal experiences. His art explores the reconciliation of opposing elements—be it reality versus unreality or natural versus artificial—as he endeavors to recapture spirituality and religiosity that modern society increasingly neglects.

The exhibition will focus on the 'Lay Eggs' series, highlighting installation artworks that reflect Wang's research on the fading religious sensibilities in contemporary art. Through his work, he addresses critical questions regarding existence and identity. For instance, he contemplates the essence of one's existence before physical birth, the origin of human life, and the cosmic beginning, anchoring these reflections in the metaphor of an egg.

The Symbolism of Eggs

In Wang's perspective, the egg symbolizes boundless potential as an undivided, unnamed entity—a safe origin where creation begins. By embodying this symbol in his creative process, Wang seeks to reconnect with his primal self, thereby giving birth to his own 'egg.' This metaphorical quest not only serves as a personal journey but also as a statement about the interconnectedness of life forms and ideas in contemporary discourse.

The exhibition will also present new works based on his artistic experimentation with ceramics in Longquan, China, exploring themes such as the 'Myth of Egg Generation' and 'Androgyny.' This adds another layer to his exploration of dualities and their synthesis in art.

About Wang Zhiyu

Wang Zhiyu, born in 1999 in Heilongjiang, China, graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022 and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the same institution. Considered a contemporary alchemist, his work bridges themes of occultism, religion, mythology, natural sciences, and personal experiences, uniting contrasting aspects such as life and non-life, male and female, peace and violence.

Using mystical motifs—including hermaphroditic bodies, angels, unicorns, dolphins, eggs, and the Ouroboros—Wang's artistic expression traverses various media including painting, sculpture, and installation, creating spaces that transcend language, history, and race.

Through research and art production, Wang seeks to rediscover and articulate the religious sentiments that art embodies, pressing for deeper spiritual engagement in a contemporary context.
