New York Embraces European Cheeses: Creating Perfect Cheese Boards for Every Occasion

New York's Taste for European Cheeses

On July 8, 2026, the vibrant Little Spain market in Manhattan held an exciting launch for the campaign titled "Discover the European Cheestories with cheeses from Spain 2." This initiative, backed by InLac with support from the European Union, aims to amplify the awareness of Spanish cheeses in the U.S. market. As part of this campaign, New Yorkers and visitors will learn that European cheeses can elevate everyday gatherings and special occasions alike.

Spanish cheeses, ranging from the famous blue varieties to rich cow, sheep, and goat cheeses, offer a unique gastronomic experience. Whether it’s for a casual get-together or a more elegant gathering, selections such as Manchego, Idiazábal, Mahón-Menorca, Cabrales, and Murcia al Vino promise to delight everyone’s palate. Each cheese, with its own distinctive flavor, contributes to a cultural heritage that spans centuries, making every bite a unique experience.

Nuria María Arribas from InLac emphasized the impressive array of European cheeses originating from Spain. With over 150 different types to explore, including 27 cheeses that are Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and 5 that hold Protected Geographical Indications (PGI), the cheeses reflect Spain’s diverse landscapes and rich traditions. Arribas noted that this broad selection caters to a variety of tastes, ensuring something delightful for every cheese lover.

Certified cheese specialist Erin T. Connolly shared her expertise on crafting the perfect cheese board. “It’s all about balance and order,” she stated. She recommends selecting a minimum of three cheese varieties, arranging them from mild to strong to guide the tasting experience. Serving cheeses at room temperature and cutting them into bite-sized pieces helps enhance their flavors. Connolly also suggests including educational tidbits about each cheese’s origin or history to deepen the culinary experience.

Complementing the cheeses, Connolly suggests pairing them with seasonal fruits, olives, nuts, and artisanal breads or crackers for a delightful array of flavors. Such additions not only enhance the overall taste but also contribute to a visually appealing presentation.

The Cheestories II campaign plans to host various activities, including participation in gourmet events and food expos like the Summer Fancy Food Show from June 28-30, 2026, in New York. These experiences are particularly aimed at food enthusiasts and the burgeoning Hispanic demographic in metropolitan areas like New York and Miami.

In addition, the campaign seeks to encourage Americans to embrace European cheeses during special occasions and gatherings, tapping into celebratory moments such as the World Cup, festive holidays, and iconic food days like National Cheese Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve.

By promoting its quality cheeses, Europe reaffirms its commitment to the strategic U.S. market, aiming not just to highlight its delectable offerings, but also the rich history, traditions, and regional connections these cheeses represent.

Ultimately, the Little Spain market serves as a gateway for New Yorkers to dive deep into the world of European cheeses, fostering a new appreciation for these culinary treasures. With its campaign, the Little Spain market invites everyone to discover a world of flavor that deserves a place on every table.
