Planet Smilez Secures Funding for Future Oral Health Professionals
Planet Smilez is embarking on a significant journey to bridge the gap in the oral healthcare workforce, thanks to vital funding from Delta Dental. This initiative comes at a crucial time when the nation is facing a shortage of oral health professionals, making the role of organizations like Planet Smilez even more critical.
Since 2023, Delta Dental has demonstrated its commitment to improving oral health education by investing over $1.7 million into various programs aimed at nurturing and developing the next generation of dental professionals. These initiatives focus on creating innovative solutions and scalable models that encourage youth from diverse backgrounds to envision careers in the field of oral health. Recognized as a 2024 awardee, Planet Smilez stands out for its dedication to conducting ten immersive workshops across the country.
In line with these objectives, Planet Smilez has initiated a series of workshops engineered to inspire school-aged children, particularly from historically underserved communities. Through tangible exposure, engaging hands-on experiences, and comprehensive mentorship, Planet Smilez aims to foster an environment where future dentists can flourish.
Dr. Kathryn Pawlak, the founder of Planet Smilez, and her team are spearheading the Discovering Dentistry Symposium (DDS) scheduled for July 26, 2025, at Harvard MEDScience in Boston, MA. This unique symposium is set to draw middle and high school students, aiming to instill interest in oral health and its interconnectedness with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields.
The DDS will feature practical workshops that allow students to dive into the many diverse pathways that a career in dentistry can offer. Attendees will engage in hands-on activities, receive mentorship from seasoned professionals, and explore the daily routines of dental health experts. The event is structured not just to inform but to inspire students to consider a future in oral health, illuminating the rewarding career possibilities that lie ahead.
Dr. Pawlak emphasizes the transformative power of education and mentorship: ‘I believe education and mentorship can transform lives,’ she states. ‘My vision for the DDS program is to empower children with essential knowledge about oral healthcare and practical dentistry experiences. We want to cultivate a future generation of professionals equipped to address the specific needs of their communities.’
This program's focus is especially poignant as it seeks to introduce students from Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) to the dental field early in their educational journey, thereby addressing current workforce gaps and improving access to care in these underserved regions. This proactive approach is essential in ensuring that even those communities that have limited access to dental services can be served by individuals who understand their specific needs.
The generous support from Delta Dental is a crucial component of this undertaking. Their partnership not only facilitates financial backing but also underscores a shared vision between the organizations: enhancing the future of oral health education and employment.
As the DDS date approaches, Planet Smilez continues to prepare for a day of learning, exploration, and inspiration. They are not just creating a workshop; they are cultivating a movement aimed at reshaping the future of oral healthcare and ensuring that the next generation of dentists comes from every neighborhood - not just the privileged.
