Global Leaders Gather in Madrid to Advocate for Sustainable Future
On December 13, 2024, under the motto "Collective Action for One Future," the Imperial Springs International Forum took place for the first time outside China, in Madrid. This ninth edition of the forum, co-organized by the Club de Madrid, focused on the profound changes shaping the international order today. The event saw participation from over 130 influential figures including former heads of state, scholars, dignitaries, and officials from more than 40 nations, alongside representatives from China and Spain.
The gathering reaffirmed a strong commitment to multilateral dialogue, advocating for the inclusion of a broader spectrum of stakeholders in creating a more inclusive and cooperative global order. The discussions aimed to eliminate prevailing tensions and prevent escalations, which could lead to nuclear threats, trade wars, and unresolved regional conflicts.
Hu Chunhua, the Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the 14th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, shared a message from President Xi Jinping, underscoring the forum's dedication to multilateralism, comprehensive discussions on global governance issues, and actively promoting China's initiatives. Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Diego Martínez Belío, emphasized that the responsibility for fostering inclusive economic growth transcends borders, positioning Spain as a constructive intermediary between China and the West.
Key topics of discussion included pressing global challenges such as inflation, protectionism, and fragile supply chains. The leaders underscored the urgent need for reforming the World Trade Organization (WTO), stabilizing international trade, and strengthening multilateral financial institutions like the G20 and various development banks. These efforts are crucial to promote financial stability and alleviate debts in low- and middle-income countries.
The forum highlighted the necessity for fair international tax systems, debt restructuring for vulnerable nations, and creating an inclusive financial framework. Moreover, participants called for a global governance framework centered on artificial intelligence and green technologies, ensuring equitable access and preventing monopolization.
Moreover, the attendees prioritized the implementation of a Future Pact, ratified at the United Nations Future Summit in 2024. This pact addresses key issues such as sustainable development, security, climate action, and digital collaboration, emphasizing accountability and resource mobilization.
Danilo Türk, President of the Club de Madrid, concluded the forum by stating that this edition showcased that dialogue and collaboration remain the most effective tools for tackling shared challenges, even in a fragmented world. He highlighted how the mutual actions taken now will shape the future of global governance.
The emphasis on collective efforts and shared responsibilities at the forum spark hope for a more equitable and sustainable future, showcasing a unified stance from global leaders against the numerous challenges facing our world today.
