Exploring the Lasting Cultural Influence of Princess Grace of Monaco

The Embassy of the Principality of Monaco, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Associates and the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, is set to present a special event titled "Princess Grace Celebrating an Enduring Legacy" on September 1, 2026. This program will take place at the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building and aims to delve into the remarkable life and cultural impact of Grace Kelly, who became the Princess of Monaco.

Grace Kelly, an iconic American film star, transitioned from Hollywood royalty to a real-life princess upon her marriage to Prince Rainier III in 1956. Her elegance, philanthropy, and influence on both fashion and cinema have left an indelible mark on cultural history.

An Evening of Reflection and Celebration

The event program is free and has already garnered significant interest, with tickets being sold out shortly after their release. Interested individuals can join a waitlist via the Smithsonian Associates website or by contacting them directly at (202) 633-3030.

Attendees can look forward to a historical presentation followed by an engaging panel discussion that will focus on Princess Grace's dual identities as a Hollywood star and a champion for the performing arts. This discussion will also highlight the essential work undertaken by the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, which continues to nurture new creative talents in her honor.

Symbolic Gestures and Ceremonies

The event is inspired by Princess Grace's final film, "The Swan," and her passion for horticulture. It will kick off with a special ceremony held in the Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose Garden at the Smithsonian, where four replicas of a historic swan bench—part of the Smithsonian Gardens collection—will be dedicated. One of these benches represents Princess Grace herself and will become a permanent tribute installed on the National Mall, serving as a lasting homage to her legacy and the friendship between Monaco and the USA.

Accompanying the bench installation, the Princess Grace rose—a blush-pink bloom emblematic of her garden interests—will be planted nearby, offering a tranquil place for reflection and remembrance for generations of visitors.

Celebrating a Milestone Anniversary

This particular occasion is even more poignant as it aligns with multiple anniversaries: the 70th wedding anniversary of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III, the 20th anniversary of the Embassy of Monaco's presence in Washington, D.C., and the America250 initiative, which collectively celebrate the enduring connections and shared history between the two nations.

The event is not just a celebration of Princess Grace but also embodies her journey—an American star who embraced her role as a global figure and cultural ambassador. It serves as a reminder of how one individual can bridge nations and inspire ongoing cultural exchange and friendship.
