Qatar's Years of Culture Initiative: A Path to Cultural Collaboration
The Years of Culture initiative, a pioneering cultural program initiated by Qatar in 2012, has announced its partner countries for the years leading up to 2030. This initiative reflects Qatar’s commitment to fostering cultural understanding and long-lasting relationships across nations through shared artistic and cultural expressions.
Partner Countries Laid Out Until 2030
On October 23, 2026, Qatar officially confirmed its partners for the Years of Culture initiative, marking yet another step towards enriching cultural ties globally. The confirmed partners include Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, and Spain. This announcement follows the previous partnerships with Egypt and Greece for the year 2027, establishing a continuum of cultural dialogue among Mediterranean and European countries.
Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Chairperson of the initiative, expressed her enthusiasm for this milestone. She noted that this is the fifteenth edition of the initiative, which aims to reinforce friendly relations between Qatar and various nations through meaningful cultural exchanges. She emphasized that the initiative not only nurtures cultural connections but also promotes economic and social development within Qatar, which aligns with its broader vision for global engagement.
Building Bridges Through Culture
The Years of Culture initiative encompasses a diverse array of sectors, including art, heritage, gastronomy, music, and education. It encourages collaboration that fosters dialogue and strengthens international connections, underscoring Qatar's belief in the power of cultural cooperation.
In 2027, Qatar will explore its cultural links with Egypt and Greece, countries rich in historical significance and contemporary creative vibrancy. This partnership aims to create new opportunities for exchange in literature, art, design, music, heritage, and more, kicking off with Qatar's participation as a guest of honor at the International Book Fair in Cairo.
Italy will be celebrated in 2028, highlighting the rich cultural tapestry woven through archaeology, fashion, design, and conservation. A significant highlight will be the opening of Qatar's permanent national pavilion at the prestigious Venice Biennale, which has been brilliantly designed by architect Lina Ghotmeh. This marks a notable moment, being the first new permanent pavilion in the Giardini in 30 years.
The collaboration with the Netherlands and Switzerland in 2029 promises innovation and sustainability, as both countries are recognized leaders in these areas. In 2030, Qatar will continue its cultural exchange tradition with Portugal and Spain, both of which host significant cultural heritage relevant to Qatar's narrative.
A Comprehensive Cultural Program
Throughout each Year of Culture, Qatar will work closely with cultural institutions, embassies, artists, and educators to present a broad array of programs that include exhibitions, festivals, fairs, artist residencies, academic exchanges, and public events across Qatar and its partner countries. The planning for these vibrant cultural activities often begins well before the official year kicks off, ensuring that institutional partnerships, professional networks, and personal relationships are sustained beyond the event.
The aims of the Years of Culture initiative go beyond mere celebration; they are designed to engender lasting connections that are rooted in mutual respect and shared histories. By bringing people together through their cultural legacies, Qatar not only enriches its own cultural landscape but also contributes to the global tapestry of diverse traditions.
