Innovative College Students Shine with FinTech Solutions at 2026 HuskyHack Event

Collegiate Innovations at the 2026 HuskyHack

The vibrant city of Tacoma, Washington, became a hub of innovation as Sound Credit Union and the Milgard Center for Business Analytics at the University of Washington Tacoma hosted the highly anticipated second annual HuskyHack. This event saw over 100 college and university students from across the state come together for an intense 24-hour hackathon focused on creating breakthrough financial technology (FinTech) solutions.

A Platform for Young Innovators

The competition kicked off at 9 AM on Saturday, October 17, with the atmosphere buzzing with excitement and creativity. Students gathered at William Philip Hall, eager to tackle the challenge ahead. The day began with a panel discussion where seasoned business leaders shared their career insights and offered wisdom to the budding entrepreneurs. This invaluable encouragement set the tone for the teams, ready to brainstorm innovative solutions that would empower consumers to manage their finances with confidence.

Participants were given the task of developing a FinTech tool that would assist Sound Credit Union in identifying when members were being manipulated or deceived, potentially preventing fraud before any financial losses occurred. Competitors had the flexibility to work individually or band together as teams, fueling a collaborative spirit that further enriched the hackathon experience.

The Competition Ramps Up

The HuskyHack consisted of two distinct phases. In the first phase, participants were required to present their initial concepts to the panel of judges. Each student was allowed a brief two-minute pitch to convey their innovative ideas, after which the top three pitches won a $1,000 cash prize. As the competition progressed, participants were encouraged to refine their concepts based on the judges' feedback, with aspirations for the grand prize looming ahead.

In the second phase, teams delivered comprehensive five-minute presentations. The stakes were high, with a $15,000 cash prize and a six-month membership to CoMotion Labs in Seattle awarded to the team with the most impactful solution. The event concluded on a high note, with the judges ultimately crowning `Scout`, developed by finance students Colin Sica and Noah Soepardi, as the winner had been developed to address the increasing prevalence of financial scams.

Introducing Scout: A Game Changer

Scout functions as a live scam-detection service, effectively monitoring phone conversations for common fraud tactics. The tool operates by placing the caller on hold and sending a discreet alert to the member whenever suspicious activity arises – a decision point for the member that could prevent financial loss. When asked about their experience, Colin and Noah expressed their excitement:
"Winning the 2026 HuskyHack affirmed the value of our idea. As finance students in our first hackathon, we realized the importance of crafting a unique and scalable solution. The journey of pairing brainstorming with rapid execution was thrilling and educational."

This innovative spirit was contagious throughout the event, showcased by the breadth of creativity and talent among the participants. The top five teams finished close behind one another, with remarkable submissions such as Flowgate, Harbor, Wire Assist, and Vantis making waves with their entrepreneurial visions.

Community Partnership and Future Perspectives

The commendable partnership between Sound Credit Union and the University of Washington Tacoma has thrived over the past decade, benefiting students and the broader community alike. Events like these prove to be invaluable for aspiring entrepreneurs, providing them the opportunity to collaborate, tackle real-world challenges, and network with industry professionals.

Looking ahead, both Sound and UWT are excited about the anticipation of the next HuskyHack scheduled for fall 2027, as they continue to inspire the next generation of innovators. With over 186,000 members, Sound Credit Union has consistently supported financial education and innovation within the community, resolute in their mission to uplift individuals through collaboration and ingenuity.

Conclusion

As innovations like Scout gain traction, the future for fintech tools appears brighter, offering consumers safer and more effective solutions for managing their financial lives. With the synergy of educational institutions and industry partners, the potential for ongoing growth and development in this digital age remains limitless.
