Innovative Partnership Between College Track and San José State University Aims to Enhance College Opportunities for California Students

Introduction

In a significant advancement for education in California, College Track has announced a groundbreaking partnership with San José State University (SJSU). This collaboration aims to broaden educational access and improve career success for students coming from under-resourced communities throughout the state. Notably, this initiative focuses on helping students who aspire to be the first in their families to achieve a bachelor's degree.

Partnership Overview

The partnership combines College Track's decade-long program methodology with SJSU's commitment to affordability and innovation tailored for first-generation college students. The College Track program offers support starting from the ninth grade, guiding students until they graduate from college and step into the workforce. Impressively, students associated with College Track graduate with bachelor's degrees at nearly three times the national rate of first-generation college students. Through this venture, both College Track and SJSU aim to equip students with the necessary resources to excel academically and build promising career paths.

Cohorted Admissions Model

At the heart of this collaboration is a cohorted admissions model, which indicates a firm commitment from SJSU to accept a minimum of 10 eligible College Track scholars annually. These scholars will primarily consist of students who not only meet Pell Grant eligibility requirements but also fulfill admissions criteria for both the California State University System and SJSU. This dedicated approach ensures that students who need it most have a pathway to higher education.

Financial and Academic Support

Once enrolled, these College Track scholars will enjoy considerable financial assistance. This package will help cover tuition, fees, and on-campus housing, fostering a sense of belonging within the university community. Such support will be facilitated through SJSU's established awarding policies alongside the Higher Education Student Housing (HESH) program.

Moreover, CT scholars will gain access to essential support programs tailored to enhance their college experience. Programs like the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), CalFresh, and California Promise will provide the necessary resources to help students navigate college life and graduate on time, addressing challenges that first-generation students often face.

Leaders' Perspectives

Dr. Shirley M. Collado, President and CEO of College Track, expressed her excitement regarding this partnership, noting, "This partnership with San José State University is our first within the California State University system, and I am thrilled that we are opening this new chapter with not only the founding CSU institution but the oldest public university on the West Coast." She also highlighted SJSU’s renowned business and engineering programs, along with strong industry connections, which align perfectly with the aspirations of the scholars.

On the other hand, SJSU President Cynthia Teniente-Matson emphasized that such partnerships are integral to the university’s mission to provide excellent, accessible education. She pointed out that this initiative is a step towards expanding opportunities for every student, affirming that SJSU aims to make college accessible to all.
