Experience Japan's Rich Cultural Heritage: Free Family Event in Sumida

The Sumida Tradition Cultural Interaction Project 2026 is an initiative by the Japan Folk Culture Promotion Association, which aims to pass down traditional Japanese culture to future generations. In July and August 2026, families will have the opportunity to engage in various traditional cultural experiences in Sumida, Tokyo, through two special free programs.

This year's festival will build upon the success of last year's 'Sumida Children's Folk Song Festival,' expanding to include not just folk songs but also ikebana (flower arranging), poetry recitation, and other activities. The festival will feature live performances from professional artists, showcasing vibrant singing and shamisen playing. Notably, the event promotes interaction, offering attendees the chance to participate in traditional dance towards the end of the show.

In addition to the performances, the festival will set up various experience booths where families can engage with traditional arts. This year's highlights include the exciting debut of an ikebana workshop, where participants can create arrangements using seasonal flowers under expert guidance. Children and their parents alike can discover the sounds of the shamisen, sing folk songs, recite poetry, and even wear kimonos for memorable photos. Each child who participates will also receive a special gift to commemorate their experience.

The Significance of the Project

Japan’s cultural and folk traditions, which have been cherished for generations, not only enrich hearts but also foster a sense of community pride and connection among people. However, with modern lifestyle changes, opportunities for children to engage with these traditions have become limited. Recognizing this challenge, the Sumida Traditional Cultural Interaction Project aims to cultivate children’s rich humanity and connect them to their cultural roots. By providing a framework for continuous learning through engaging events, this initiative endeavors to create fresh encounters with Japan's cultural heritage.
