Waters Corporation Launches TGA Smart-Seal-Pans for Efficient Material Analysis

Waters Corporation Unveils TGA Smart-Seal-Pans for Enhanced Laboratory Efficiency

In a significant advancement for laboratories dealing with atmosphere-sensitive materials, Waters Corporation has launched the innovative TGA Smart-Seal™ Pans through its TA Instruments Division. This new product allows labs to conduct analyses on materials crucial for developing batteries, modern polymers, and pharmaceuticals without the need for costly atmospheric control setups.

The TGA Smart-Seal Advantage

These pans are designed to facilitate thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) in a standard laboratory environment, reducing costs and space requirements by up to 50%. Traditional methods necessitated the use of gloveboxes or other atmospheric control systems, which added complexity and significant expense to the analytical process.

According to Yu Cheng, Vice President of Research and Development at TA Instruments, many clients now have an urgent need to analyze air-sensitive samples efficiently and accurately. "Until now, operating TGAs in controlled atmospheres was the only reliable option, which pushed costs and complexity higher. We are proud to introduce TGA Smart-Seal-Pans, providing reliable TGA data at a lower cost in a traditional lab setting," he said.

How It Works

The TGA Smart-Seal-Pans are user-friendly, allowing the preparation and sealing of air-sensitive materials in a fully airtight environment. The self-opening mechanism, made from a proprietary shape memory alloy, activates automatically at approximately 55°C. This feature enables the pan to open without user intervention, ensuring that samples are never exposed to ambient conditions. Furthermore, the design supports the simultaneous preparation of multiple moisture- and air-sensitive samples, reducing operational costs and workflow bottlenecks.

Dr. Y. Shirley Meng, a prominent researcher at The University of Chicago, praised the TGA Smart-Seal-Pans for their impact on productivity. She noted, "These pans have enabled us to conduct TGA experiments on air-sensitive battery materials with greater certainty and less time involved. We observed productivity gains while simultaneously lowering the significant investment and hassle associated with operating and maintaining a TGA in a large glovebox. The TGA Smart-Seal-Pans represent a remarkable step forward in utilizing TGA in our research."

Cost and Efficiency

Typical installations of TGAs in controlled environments can nearly double the costs due to glovebox requirements and increase maintenance fees. Waters’ TGA Smart-Seal-Pans provide a precise thermogravimetric analysis of atmosphere-sensitive samples without the need to operate within a glove box. By eliminating the glovebox requirement, clients can save valuable lab space and potentially operate double the number of TGA systems at nearly the same price, thus enhancing throughput.

The TGA Smart-Seal-Pans are now available to laboratories worldwide. As the demand for reliable and efficient analysis of air-sensitive materials rises, this innovative solution is set to redefine laboratory practices and increase research capabilities across diverse fields.
