Erie's Public Schools Launches Electric School Bus Fleet for Sustainable Transportation

Erie's Public Schools Unveils Its Electric School Bus Fleet

Erie's Public Schools recently celebrated a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability by launching a fleet of electric school buses. This innovative project marks the district's first major venture into electrifying student transportation, with 12 new IC electric school buses and the accompanying charging infrastructure set to enhance daily commutes for students.

The transition to electric buses represents a partnership with Highland Electric Fleets, recognized as North America’s leading provider of Electrification-as-a-Service (EaaS). This collaboration is pivotal in not only delivering the buses and necessary charging stations but also ensuring ongoing support for this long-term electrification initiative. This strategic move reflects the district's ongoing efforts to modernize its transportation system, ensuring reliability for students while managing costs over the long haul.

Advantages of Electric School Buses

Electric buses present several key advantages over traditional diesel-powered models. For starters, they consist of significantly fewer moving parts, which reduces the need for routine maintenance and minimizes the influence of fluctuating fuel prices. Moreover, electric buses offer a notably quieter ride, operating at approximately one-quarter of the noise level produced by diesel buses. This quiet operation fosters a more serene environment for students during travel, which can be particularly beneficial at the beginning and end of school days.

Not only do these electric buses improve the riding experience, but they also notably enhance the health and well-being of students. Research has consistently shown that students traveling in electric school buses are exposed to drastically less air pollution, thereby reducing their exposure to harmful diesel exhaust. Since diesel emissions have been linked to asthma and other respiratory issues, the health benefits of this transition are significant. Studies indicate that substituting just five diesel buses with electric alternatives could lower pediatric asthma risks for around 1,500 students.

Assistant Superintendent of Operations Neal Brokman articulated the district's excitement about this transformation, stating, "We're incredibly excited to partner with Highland Electric Fleets for what we believe is a transformational shift in how we approach transportation. We're committed to providing a reliable, safe, sensory-aware, and healthy transportation experience for our students, and this partnership allows us to do just that."

Funding and Community Involvement

The launch of this electric fleet was made possible through a substantial award of nearly $4.8 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program. This funding is crucial, as it supports not only the deployment of the buses and their charging infrastructure but also necessary upgrades at the district's transportation facility to accommodate and maintain these new vehicles.

In the words of Duncan McIntyre, CEO of Highland Electric Fleets, "School districts across the country are showing that electric school buses can support reliable daily operations while improving the ride experience for students." For Erie, this project signifies a reduction in students' exposure to harmful diesel emissions and a quieter experience for drivers, all while positioning the district for long-term operational success and stability.

A special ribbon-cutting event was held on May 21, where district leaders, project partners, community stakeholders, and media gathered to experience the new buses. This celebration showcased not only the new vehicles but also the commitment to sustainable and healthy student transportation.

About the District and Its Commitment to Education

Erie's Public Schools encompasses 16 schools and serves approximately 10,000 students every day. The district fosters an educational environment that promotes high expectations, collaboration, and accountability, dedicated to ensuring high levels of student engagement through personalized pathways to academic excellence.

The launch of the electric school bus fleet is a testament to Erie’s commitment to adopting innovative solutions that not only enhance educational quality but also prioritize the health and well-being of its students and the community.

In conclusion, Erie's Public Schools is taking a commendable step towards a sustainable future with the introduction of an electric school bus fleet, promising to elevate student transportation while contributing positively to the environment.
