Introducing FLASH: A New EV Fast-Charger Initiative in Musashimurayama

In a significant move towards enhancing electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, Ten Fields Factory, a reputable company from Kyoto, has begun the rollout of its advanced EV fast charger, "FLASH," at two key public locations in Musashimurayama, Tokyo: the Musashimurayama City Hall and the Citizens' General Center. This initiative not only aims to provide greater convenience for visitors but also plays a crucial role in the city’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by improving the necessary infrastructure.

Features of FLASH Chargers

The FLASH fast charger is designed for high-output, short-duration charging. It supports two major charging standards — CHAdeMO and Tesla’s NACS — ensuring compatibility with nearly all EVs available in Japan. This eliminates the need for adapters, thereby providing an impressive user experience with rapid and straightforward charging.

Equipped with a maximum output of 240kW, FLASH significantly decreases the time required for charging as compared to traditional lower-output chargers, which enhances overall convenience.

Additionally, FLASH’s operations are non-membership based, enabling users to pay via credit card or QR code without needing to register for an app. This feature is especially beneficial for casual visitors and tourists who may not own an EV but wish to utilize the facility.

Role of EV Chargers

The FLASH charger incorporates an Over-the-Air (OTA) system that allows for real-time price adjustments and the capability to offer free charging during emergencies. In the event of a disaster, FLASH can quickly make charging free to support afflicted areas.

Historically, FLASH has provided such humanitarian support by offering free charging during incidents like the forest fires in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, and Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture.

As natural disasters become more frequent in Japan, the role of EVs evolves into that of a mobile power source. EVs can transfer stored energy to homes and facilities, enhancing the security of power supplies during outages. Technologies like Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) enable EVs to supply electricity to residences, ensuring basic living standards are maintained even in blackout situations.
