Clarivate Announces the Release of 2025 Journal Citation Reports Celebrating 50 Years of Academic Excellence

Clarivate Unveils the 2025 Journal Citation Reports

On June 18, 2025, Clarivate Plc (NYSE: CLVT) released the highly anticipated 2025 update to its Journal Citation Reports (JCR). This year's release is particularly significant as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of these indispensable reports, which are fondly regarded as the benchmark for measuring the performance of academic journals. The JCR serves as a vital resource for academic institutions, researchers, and publishers, enabling them to understand and assess the reliability and impact of various scholarly journals.

The JCR highlights journals that have successfully met stringent quality criteria to be included in the Web of Science Core Collection. This rigorous inclusion process guarantees that users can trust the information and statistics provided within the reports. Each annual issue of the JCR offers a wealth of publisher-neutral data, metrics, and evaluations aimed at enriching users’ comprehension of journal performance. Central to this is the widely acknowledged Journal Impact Factor (JIF), along with the Journal Citation Indicator, which provides further insights into journal influence.

Key Highlights from the 2025 Release

The 2025 Journal Citation Reports presents several noteworthy updates, including:
  • - An expansive database featuring 22,249 journals categorized into 254 diverse subjects.
  • - More than 6,200 journals have been published under gold open access, emphasizing the growing shift toward accessible research dissemination.
  • - Recognition of scholarly contributions from 111 countries, with 14,591 journals in science, 7,559 in social sciences, and 3,368 covering arts and humanities disciplines.
  • - A total of 618 journals earned their JIF for the very first time, showcasing new and emerging voices in academia.
  • - In a significant policy change, this year’s release excludes citations from retracted articles when calculating the JIF numerator. Although retracted articles are still counted in the denominator, this move aims to enhance the accuracy and transparency of the impact metrics, affecting only 1% of the journals.

Dr. Nandita Quaderi, Senior Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of Web of Science, expressed pride in honoring the publication’s legacy while also adapting to the evolving scholarly landscape. "As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Journal Citation Reports, we are committed to upholding our founder Eugene Garfield's vision and ensuring a future that bolsters the integrity of scientific records. Our ongoing journey is aimed at creating a fairer, transparent, and trustworthy scholarly ecosystem," she stated.

Emmanuel Thiveaud, Senior Vice President of Research and Analytics at Clarivate, emphasized the important role that the JCR plays in the global research community. He noted, "We are thrilled to present this year's Journal Citation Reports, as they continue to be an invaluable resource for researchers and institutions alike. The insights generated from these data empower the advancement of knowledge and innovation worldwide."
