The First AI Workshop for Senior Women by Halmek Kicks Off in Daikanyama
Halmek, known as Japan's top-selling magazine, has launched an exciting new initiative to engage senior women with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their daily lives. The workshop, titled "How to Get Started with AI," was held at the Daikanyama Tsutaya Bookstore SHARE LOUNGE on May 20, 2026, and garnered nearly full capacity, attracting 36 women aged between 50 and 70. This marks a significant step toward demystifying AI for those who may feel intimidated or uncertain about it.
With a focus on making AI more approachable, the workshop aimed at alleviating fears among senior women, who often view AI as something complex and daunting. Through the concept of AI acting like the “world's smartest grandchild,” participants were encouraged to embrace AI as a helpful companion rather than a technical barrier. The session included practical uses of AI in everyday situations, like recipe suggestions, travel planning, and even image generation, all done using their smartphones.
Feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing surprise at how useful and convenient AI can be in their lives. Statements such as, "I didn’t realize it could be this useful!" and "I believe AI will play an important role going forward!" were common, showcasing a shift in attitudes towards AI, which slowly transformed from fear to acceptance as a supportive presence in their lives.
Addressing Psychological Hurdles Among Seniors
The need for this workshop arises from a study conducted by Halmek in March 2026, which revealed that 37.6% of individuals in their 60s and 70s are using AI services. Yet, a survey by Yomiuri Shimbun in February 2026 showed that over 30% of women in their 60s still feel an apprehension towards AI. Thus, Halmek stepped in to provide that crucial first step toward embracing this technology through its engaging workshop.
By presenting AI in a relatable and friendly light, Halmek hopes to make it a beneficial part of the participants’ daily routines. They aim to show seniors how to comfortably incorporate AI into their lives, thus making technology less intimidating and more beneficial.
An Interactive Experience
The workshop began with a theory session addressing participants' fears regarding AI and ended with hands-on experience using their smartphones. Attendees practiced how to engage with AI through real-life tasks, including advising on recipes based on remaining ingredients, proposing travel itineraries, and crafting email responses. Additionally, participants got a chance to generate images using AI, such as transforming photos of their pets into human-like versions, showcasing the potential creativity of AI technology.
Many participants shared their newfound understanding with comments like, "I can now see how AI integrates into my daily life" and "I was surprised by how easily I could edit images!" The workshop not only highlighted the usefulness of AI but also educated attendees on the importance of verifying information sourced from AI and building critical thinking skills around it.
Uniting Forces: Halmek and SHARE LOUNGE
This workshop was born out of a partnership between Halmek and SHARE LOUNGE, catering specifically to the aim of connecting generations. Halmek identified SHARE LOUNGE as an ideal venue due to its stable Wi-Fi and cultural significance as a melting pot of various demographics, making it an excellent environment for introducing seniors to digital literacy.
In turn, SHARE LOUNGE has been looking to broaden its appeal beyond younger individuals and business professionals by welcoming and including seniors in their offerings. This event served as a bridge to introduce the senior community to an environment where they can feel safe and comfortable engaging with new technology alongside younger generations.
By combining Halmek’s expertise with the multi-generational vision of SHARE LOUNGE, they have forged a new path toward intergenerational collaboration and mutual growth among communities.
