Unveiling the Most Beloved Train Melodies in Japan: Ranking Revealed!

On July 17 to August 7, 2026, a fascinating survey titled "Your Favorite Train Melodies Ranking 2026" was conducted, drawing the participation of 836 individuals both from Japan and abroad. Each participant was invited to select up to three of their favorite departure melodies, which lead to intriguing insights into the preferences of different age groups.

The final results unveiled that the melody achieving the top position was "Dream Park," which captured 179 votes, accounting for 21.4% of the total participants. Following closely was "Verde Rayo V2" in second place and "Cielo Estrellado" in third. Notably, a significant generational divide emerged, with the young demographic (under 20s) predominantly favoring "Dream Park," while those in their 30s and 40s leaned towards "Verde Rayo V2." Interestingly, voters in their 50s expressed a strong preference for the traditional "Railway Song," illustrating how train melodies resonate with personal experiences and memories attributable to different life stages.

Free-text responses highlighted not just the allure of the melodies themselves but also evoked fond memories associated with childhood, frequently used stations, and travel experiences. These narratives serve as a testament to the emotional bond passengers create with their chosen melodic tunes.

Top 20 Favorite Train Melodies 2026

1. Dream Park - 179 votes
2. Verde Rayo V2 - 155 votes
3. Cielo Estrellado - 129 votes

The second-place melody, "Verde Rayo V2," attracted praise for its grandeur when combined with acoustic elements in underground stations. This symphonic quality reflects urban living, leading listeners to appreciate its reverberation in the station environment. In the case of "Cielo Estrellado," respondents highlighted its invigorating pace and robust character, resonating with a sense of excitement.

The stark differences across age demographics, however, emerged as a significant focus of this survey, revealing a trend where younger generations lean towards currently familiar melodies, while older participants cherish tunes that have withstood the test of time.

An analysis of the reasons behind affection for specific train melodies offered additional insights. Of the 836 respondents, 622 (approximately 74.4%) provided open-ended feedback. The responses indicated three primary reasons:

1. Appreciation of Melody and Sound: Many responses revolved around the appealing qualities of the melodies, including aspects like "catchiness" and "classiness."

2. Memories Associated with Stations: Numerous answers referenced connections to personal experiences at train stations, such as memories tied to daily commutes or travel adventures.

3. Nostalgia and Sentimentality: Strong ties to childhood memories were revealed, showcasing how these melodies played a role in transporting individuals back to joyful times and experiences associated with family trips or school commutes.

Additionally, the geographical distribution of participants showed that, while a significant majority hailed from the Kanto region (662 respondents), voices from other areas, including Chubu and Kinki, added interesting regional variances to the rankings.

Interestingly, the frequency of train usage among respondents painted a vivid picture. Of the surveyed individuals, 52.5% reported using trains on a daily basis, with another 26.4% using them several times a week, meaning that nearly 79% of participants were habitual train users, with genuine experiences of the melodies in play.

Conclusion

This survey's findings reveal that favorite train melodies are deeply intertwined with personal experiences and emotions rather than merely musical preferences.
