Telecom Leaders Embrace AI but Face Scalability Challenges
The landscape of the telecommunications industry is witnessing a pivotal transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI). According to the latest
Telecom Pulse Survey Report conducted by
HCLTech, a significant number of telecom leaders acknowledge AI as a critical driver for future revenue generation. Notably, 60% of those surveyed indicated AI's transformative potential. However, there is a concerning gap when it comes to operational readiness; only a mere 25% of executives feel their organizations are equipped to implement AI solutions on a large scale.
This startling revelation underscores the challenges that many telecommunications companies continue to face as they strive to evolve from traditional telecom service providers to AI-powered technology companies, or TechCos. The report highlights that persistent issues such as legacy infrastructure, the modernization of cloud-native capabilities, and a lack of skilled personnel are hampering progress. The telecom industry finds itself at a crucial crossroads: while connectivity remains essential, it is becoming increasingly commoditized, with pressure mounting on traditional business models.
More than 70% of survey participants concur that as connectivity services become more commonplace, there is a pressing need for differentiation through enhanced digital services. Despite this recognition, innovation remains stagnant, as evidenced by the fact that a staggering 80% of executives reported launching fewer than five new digital products or services in the past year. This slow pace of innovation raises alarms regarding product engineering and the speed with which organizations can bring new offerings to market.
Collaboration is emerging as a key strategy for overcoming these hurdles. Nearly half of the telecom leaders surveyed identified partnerships with hyperscalers, AI platform providers, and software vendors as vital to accelerating innovation and monetizing digital services. However, the metrics used to measure success continue to focus primarily on cost optimization, which could limit the full potential of AI and digital transformation initiatives.
Anil Ganjoo, Chief Growth Officer and Global Head of Telecom, Media, and Technology at HCLTech, emphasized the urgency of adapting to these shifts: "The telecom industry is at a defining moment as AI transforms networks into intelligent, platform-driven ecosystems. This research recognizes that connectivity alone is no longer sufficient to sustain growth. Our AI-intrinsic approach enables telecom companies to transition into TechCos more rapidly, enhancing innovation and embracing autonomous operations."
As the telecommunications sector faces these pressing challenges, the call to action for stakeholders is clear: to fully harness the power of AI, companies must not only adopt advanced technologies but also foster a culture of innovation that aligns with the demands of a rapidly changing market. The comprehensive findings of the
Telecom Pulse Survey Report reflect the urgent need for the industry to evolve and adapt, as the future of telecommunications increasingly hinges on AI-driven solutions.
