Duke Energy's Generous Contributions Tackle Hunger in South Carolina This Giving Tuesday

Duke Energy's Generous Contributions Tackling Hunger in South Carolina

Duke Energy recently concluded its month-long initiative to support local organizations working to eliminate hunger issues in South Carolina, announcing more than $300,000 in unexpected microgrants this Giving Tuesday. This effort is part of a larger campaign allocating over $500,000 to feeding programs across the state.

The donations were made to help address significant challenges such as food deserts, insecurities, and inequities, which affect many communities in South Carolina. Tim Pearson, Duke Energy's South Carolina president, highlighted the essence of a 'surcee,' a small, unexpected gift, emphasizing that Giving Tuesday serves as an ideal occasion to recognize the crucial work done by these organizations throughout the year.

Many organizations, including Mill Village Farms, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, and the Harvest Hope Food Bank, are among the recipients benefiting from this campaign. These contributions will bolster various feeding programs, including senior mobile food initiatives and weekend backpack programs for students.

The $300,000 in microgrants and contributions were surprise allocations intended to support smaller agencies that often operate on tight budgets, filling essential gaps in their communities. For many organizations, this funding acts as a lifeline, enabling them to continue serving those in desperate need of food assistance.

Volunteering has also been a significant part of Duke Energy's initiative. Employees have dedicated their time to assist with packing and distributing food boxes, helping prepare backpacks, and contributing physical labor to senior mobile food programs. Their efforts underscore a community spirit that thrives particularly during the holiday season.

Given the escalating food prices and economic strain on families, the support for local food banks becomes even more critical. As noted by several recipients, including Shelley Price from GRASP, the financial assistance profoundly impacts food availability for those struggling to provide for their households.

Laura Boles, president of Mobile Meals, also expressed gratitude, stating that Duke Energy's support enhances their mission of delivering nutritious meals and companionship to their recipients.

Beyond addressing hunger, Duke Energy is also focused on helping families manage other financial burdens. Their website features resources aimed at assisting customers in navigating energy bills amid tough economic times.
