Principal Foundation Grants $500,000 to Transform the National Geographic Society

On November 12, 2025, Principal Foundation, a well-known global nonprofit organization based in Des Moines, Iowa, unveiled a significant initiative to bolster the National Geographic Society's mission. They announced a generous grant of $500,000 that aims to support the transformative project of the Society's headquarters in Washington, D.C. This funding will contribute to the development of the National Geographic Museum of Exploration, which is scheduled to welcome visitors in mid-2026.

A Space for Curiosity and Connection

Kara Ramirez Mullins, the Chief Advancement Officer of the National Geographic Society, expressed her excitement about the collaboration: "It takes incredible innovation to bring a project like the Museum of Exploration to life, and we are thrilled to have support from visionary partners who share in our commitment to deepening the public's connection to the wonder of our world." The new museum will serve as a vital engagement space for the public, fostering curiosity and encouraging people to explore the wonders of the world around them.

The Museum of Exploration represents the Society's commitment to illuminate and protect the world's natural wonders. With more than a century of history behind it, the National Geographic Society aims to build on its legacy of connecting a global community of explorers—scientists, conservationists, educators, and storytellers—who share their knowledge and experiences with the world.

Strengthening Communities Through Exploration

Jo Christine Miles, the director of Principal Foundation and Community Relations at Principal Financial Group, also highlighted the importance of this initiative: "We're proud to support the National Geographic Society in opening a space that will inspire curiosity and bring communities closer through the power of exploration." In addition to the museum funding, Principal Foundation is sponsoring National Geographic Live, a captivating touring series that connects audiences with stories from Explorers. The local Des Moines event, scheduled for November 18 at the Civic Center, will feature a presentation called "Earth After Dark" by renowned National Geographic Explorer Babak Tafreshi. This visually striking experience will take attendees on a journey through the night sky, showcasing Tafreshi's stunning photography and stories, reinforcing the shared wonder of exploration.

This partnership between Principal Foundation and the National Geographic Society exemplifies how philanthropic efforts can effectively enhance community engagement through new experiences.
