Raytheon UK Unveils Red Kite: A New Chapter for UK Defence

The annual Farnborough International Airshow has once again become a stage for innovation, this year showcasing Raytheon UK’s latest precision weapon, the Red Kite. This new addition marks a significant milestone in the UK’s defence capabilities, being the first sovereign weapon fully designed and digitally engineered on British soil.

Raytheon UK, a key player in RTX's (NYSE: RTX) Raytheon division, presented Red Kite as an affordable and highly deployable weapon system, designed to enhance the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) ability to scale critical stockpiles rapidly. The development of this precision weapon involved collaboration with a consortium of British defence partners, aiming to combine innovation with efficiency in manufacturing.

James Gray, managing director and chief executive of Raytheon UK, emphasized the importance of affordability and adaptability in Red Kite's design. Over the past five years, the team has effectively utilized advanced digital modelling technologies to transition from concept to prototype swiftly. The Red Kite is built upon the framework of the existing Stormbreaker® airframe and is designed to be compatible across various air platforms. This integration showcases Raytheon UK's longstanding expertise in precision weaponry, echoing the success of previously developed systems like Paveway IV. By introducing a cost-effective, high-volume capability through Red Kite, the RAF gains further operational flexibility in its missions.

In Gray's view, Red Kite is a strategic asset that enables the delivery of capabilities to the frontline more swiftly, reducing costs and increasing availability when it matters most. This weapon signifies a commitment to enhancing the resilience of the UK's defence industrial base, solidifying national sovereignty in the face of emerging threats.

The production and delivery of Red Kite will engage a nationwide supply chain in the UK, uniting expertise in design, engineering, and manufacturing from across the nation. Significant contributions will come from various locations: from systems electronics and software development in Harlow to control actuation systems from Glenrothes. This comprehensive approach is not only set to sustain high-skilled jobs within the UK but also ensures the retention of essential manufacturing capabilities across England, Scotland, and Wales. Raytheon UK estimates that the program will directly support around 140 highly skilled jobs.

With over 2,000 employees, the company plays a pivotal role in developing defence and space products that include advanced training transformation services and ongoing investments in research and development.
