Celebrating Dr. Dennis Keene’s Remarkable 45-Year Tenure at Church of the Ascension
Dr. Dennis Keene Retires After 45 Years of Musical Excellence
After an impressive tenure of 45 years, Dr. Dennis Keene will officially retire as the Organist and Choirmaster of the Church of the Ascension in New York City this May. Ascension, a historic Episcopal parish located in Greenwich Village, has been not only a home for Dr. Keene but also the center of the vibrant musical tradition he has so passionately cultivated.
During his nearly five decades in this role, Dr. Keene has significantly influenced the church's musical life. Ascension's music program is now recognized as one of the most esteemed liturgical and concert traditions in New York City. His leadership has attracted some of the finest musicians and audiences from all over, elevating the parish's status as an epicenter for musical excellence.
Dr. Keene is celebrated as only the second Organist and Choirmaster throughout the church's century-long history. His predecessor, Vernon de Tar, had previously established a solid reputation for exceptional sacred music, which Dr. Keene has continued to expand upon. As the parish prepares to celebrate its bicentennial in 2027, Dr. Keene's departure marks the end of an era but leaves a legacy that will not fade with time.
One of the hallmark achievements of Dr. Keene's career was the founding of Voices of Ascension in 1990, a professional chorus and orchestra stemming from the church's longstanding tradition. Under his expert guidance, this ensemble has garnered international attention for its outstanding performances and recordings, collaborating with numerous renowned arts organizations. Dr. Keene's educational background, including degrees from the prestigious Juilliard School and tutelage under esteemed organists in Paris, has greatly influenced his unique musical outlook and approach.
In Dr. Keene's own words, "For nearly 50 years, the Church of the Ascension has been a musical home for me. It has been a privilege to work with extraordinary singers and musicians and to share this repertoire in the context of worship." His dedication to the craft of choral music has been recognized widely, producing acclaimed recordings that range from Renaissance works to major Romantic compositions.
The Reverend Elizabeth Maxwell, Rector of the Church of the Ascension, remarked, "Dennis Keene's vision and musicianship have shaped the spiritual and artistic life of this parish for nearly half a century. His legacy will resound in our worship and in the wider musical community for generations."
While Dr. Keene will step down from his formal role at the church, he will continue to serve as the Artistic Director and Conductor of Voices of Ascension, ensuring that his influence on the musical landscape persists even after his retirement from the church. As the community gathered to celebrate his contributions, it is clear that Dr. Keene leaves behind not just a position but a vibrant heritage that will inspire future generations of musicians and worshippers alike.
His retirement, while marking a significant shift in leadership, represents a milestone not only in his personal journey but also in the wider context of church music, reflecting the growth and evolution of a beloved community rooted in rich musical traditions. The future may be unwritten, but its pages will surely be influenced by the notes and harmonies that Dr. Dennis Keene has lovingly crafted over the decades.
