Innovative Laser Range Finding Demonstration by Sceye and SoftBank Corp in Stratospheric Communications
Pioneering Laser Range Finding in Stratospheric Communications
In a remarkable technological breakthrough, Sceye, an aerospace and materials science company, has partnered with SoftBank Corp. to successfully demonstrate the world's first laser range finding capabilities using High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS). This historic event took place during Sceye's ST1 month-long flight, showcasing innovative approaches to stratospheric communications.
The Demonstration
On September 24, 2026, in Moriarty, New Mexico, the SoftBank ground team tracked Sceye’s stratospheric platform in real time while continuously receiving reflected laser signals. This demonstration was not just a technical feat; it heralds a new era of optical wireless communication that connects the earth, stratosphere, and beyond.
The project involved collaboration with Hitotsubashi University and the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), which designed the corner cube reflector (CCR) installed on Sceye’s HAPS. SoftBank developed the reflector block, which was utilized during the flight over Japan, marking a significant step in the advancement of stratospheric infrastructure.
