Raytheon Wins Contract for SeaRAM Defense System in Australia
Raytheon Secures SeaRAM Contract for Australia’s Mogami-class Frigates
In a significant move to bolster naval defense capabilities, Raytheon, an RTX business, has been awarded a notable contract from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to supply their advanced SeaRAM® ship self-defense systems. This initiative is part of Australia’s Sea3000 General Purpose Frigate program, which is designed to replace the decommissioning Anzac-class frigates with a new fleet of upgraded Mogami-class frigates.
Contract Details
Under the terms of the contract, Raytheon will be providing various components, including SeaRAM launchers, Blast Test Vehicles, and comprehensive technical services. These products will support the installation and rigorous testing of the SeaRAM systems for the first three frigates currently under construction in Japan by MHI.
As articulated by Barbara Borganovi, the president of Naval Power at Raytheon, "SeaRAM extends the defensive reach of a ship beyond traditional close-in weapon system ranges." This capability is crucial for ensuring that the Royal Australian Navy’s new surface combatants are equipped with a proven and effective terminal air and missile defense layer.
SeaRAM Explained
The SeaRAM system uniquely integrates the Phalanx Close In Weapon System (CIWS) with the Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM). This combination allows for autonomous terminal defense against various threats, especially cruise missiles and advanced airborne challenges that modern naval vessels might face. The selection of SeaRAM by Australia not only highlights the enduring demand for advanced defense systems but also opens the door for Australia to become a new member in the global RAM user community.
Project Timeline
The work associated with this contract will occur at Raytheon’s facilities in Louisville, Kentucky. Deliveries of the SeaRAM systems are anticipated to commence in late 2028, marking an important timeline for both Raytheon and the Australian Navy as they enhance their defense capabilities.
