Eggs Enhances Copyright Management Services
Eggs Inc., headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo, under the leadership of CEO Eitaro Shibasaki, has announced a major update to its copyright management application service offered through "Eggs Pass". This service aims to support individual artists in their careers by simplifying previously complex formalities and enabling completion of procedures in as little as one day.
What is "Eggs Pass"?
"Eggs Pass" serves as a distribution agency, allowing artists to sell their music through over 170 global music distribution stores, including Apple Music, Spotify, and Rekochoku. Notably, the service has no registration or renewal fees. By managing copyright applications on behalf of the distributed tracks, artists can earn performance royalties. The royalties collected, after deducting processing fees, are then returned to the authors (lyricists and composers).
Background of the Service Update
In 2023, to better facilitate revenue opportunities for copyright holders, Eggs began intermediating contracts to register and manage music author details with music publishers, including MCJ, through copyright management enterprises like NexTone. Previously, the process from application to contract completion took over 14 days, requiring applicants to collect and manually input personal information of the authors. As the number of co-written works increased, gathering and sharing co-authors' personal information became an additional hurdle in the application process. By updating the system, Eggs aims to address these challenges effectively.
Overview of the Service Update
1. Streamlined Application to Contract Process
The recent upgrade allows Eggs to centralize the application and contract procedures following a delegation of copyright contract signing rights from MCJ. With this change, the time required for completing all processes, which previously took over 14 days, has been reduced to as short as one day. This improvement also helps prevent issues like "forgetting to contract" and ensures timely notifications in case of changes to the authors' information.
2. Implementation of "Eggs Pass ID" for Privacy
With the service update, the entire copyright management application flow has been revamped. Previously, applicants were required to manually enter authors' personal information. Now, with the introduction of the "Eggs Pass ID," authors can register their ID in advance and simply share it with applicants, allowing submissions to be completed without exchanging personal information.
It is worth noting that the development for these system improvements was entirely carried out in-house by Eggs.
Comprehensive Support for Artists
In addition to copyright management, "Eggs Pass" supports artists' activities through monetization of music utilization in videos, CD sales, live performances, and media promotions. With the rise of subscription services, music discovery through playlists, video streaming platforms, social media sharing, and live activities have provided artists more opportunities than ever. Eggs seeks to help artists who may have previously missed opportunities for monetization by managing the collection and distribution of royalties, allowing them to focus on creative endeavors and continue to showcase their talents.
Looking ahead, Eggs is committed to promoting the creator economy by providing multifaceted support to indie artists and generating opportunities for live performances, further contributing to the music industry.
