Hankyu Hanshin Express Selected for SAF Cargo Transport Initiative



On July 23, 2023, Hankyu Hanshin Express, headquartered in Osaka, was selected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as one of the cargo agents to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for air cargo transportation. This initiative is a part of the effort to reduce CO2 emissions for companies registered in Tokyo.

The concept of decarbonizing business activities involves addressing Scope 1 emissions, which are direct greenhouse gas emissions from the company's own operations. Additionally, Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect emissions resulting from the use of electricity and other energy sourced from third parties. However, Scope 3 emissions, which pertain to the indirect emissions related to the supply chain of a company's product transport, are also increasingly coming under scrutiny. In air cargo, which is associated with high CO2 emissions, significant steps must be taken to mitigate these impacts.

Starting in 2024, the Tokyo government will initiate a project that subsidizes the additional costs incurred when utilizing SAF for cargo transport in air freight, directed at companies registered in Tokyo.
