Cultural Exchange Program Highlights Young Asian Americans' Journey to Japan

The Kakehashi Project, aimed at enhancing mutual understanding between Japan and the United States, has welcomed five young Asian American individuals from the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) to Japan. Their visit spans from March 12 to March 18, 2026, during which they will engage deeply in both educational and cultural exchanges across Tokyo and Aomori Prefecture.

In Tokyo, they will have the opportunity to visit key governmental institutions including the National Diet and the Prime Minister's Office, gaining firsthand insights into Japan’s political landscape. Additionally, visits to major corporations such as Toyota will allow participants to understand Japan's economic strengths and challenges from an insider’s perspective. These experiences are designed to provide a comprehensive view of the country’s intricate socio-political fabric.

The adventure doesn’t end in the capital; the group will travel to Aomori Prefecture to participate in school exchanges. Engaging with local students at Hachinohe Gakuin University, they will foster deeper understanding and friendships, immersing themselves in the daily lives and cultures of their Japanese peers. The scheduled homestay will further enhance this cultural immersion, as they will experience Japanese life through direct interaction with host families.

Among the planned cultural experiences, participants will learn traditional regional arts, including Nambu Hishi embroidery and regional drum performances, allowing them to connect with Japan’s rich heritage.

The Kakehashi Project is part of Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs' initiative to promote international exchange, aimed at fostering understanding of Japanese culture, society, and policies among future leaders and influencers from North America. This program not only emphasizes personal growth and education but also encourages participants to share their newfound insights upon their return home, thereby amplifying the cultural exchange.

APAICS, established in 1994, champions the political participation and leadership of Asian Pacific Americans, making this collaboration particularly significant as it aligns with its core mission of increasing representation and understanding within the political landscape.

The participants' itinerary is packed with activities that highlight both the historical and contemporary aspects of Japan. To conclude their journey, a workshop will facilitate discussions on their experiences and learning outcomes, further cultivating the skills necessary for effective communication and advocacy.

This endeavor aims to strengthen the ties between the U.S. and Japan through intercultural understanding, paving the way for a more integrated and cooperative future. The Kakehashi Project reaches beyond mere travel; it is a dedication to cultivating global citizens equipped to bridge cultural divides, fostering peace and collaboration in an increasingly interconnected world.
