IREX Welcomes Aleksander Dardeli as New President and CEO
IREX, a global leader in education and community development, has announced the appointment of Aleksander (Aleks) Dardeli as its new president and chief executive officer effective September 1, 2025. The decision comes at a pivotal time for the organization as it aims to rethink its strategies and expand its global reach under Dardeli's leadership.
Aleks is no stranger to IREX, having served as the executive vice president prior to his departure. In that role, he was instrumental in driving the organization's global expansion, fostering innovation, enhancing management systems, and overseeing the acquisition of Development Gateway—a company aligned with IREX's mission. His return comes after a successful tenure as the Chief Operating Officer at Save the Children, where he led strategic initiatives and improved organizational performance.
David A. Gross, chair of the board, expressed enthusiasm for Dardeli’s return, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Aleks back to IREX. His insights and experience are suited to guide the organization through changing environments. Aleks knows how to build strong partnerships and navigate complex situations, and we are confident in his ability to lead IREX forward."
Kate Thompson, interim CEO, added, "Aleks's return injects new energy into the organization, with robust programs and a resilient team of exceptionally talented professionals. We look forward to the next chapter under his leadership."
With over 25 years in international development, Dardeli has held leadership positions in various organizations, including IBI International, DynCorp International/Casals, East-West Management Institute, and International Development Law Organization. His work has focused on enhancing education, empowering youth, and strengthening both public and private institutions in various regions, including transitional economies and post-conflict areas. Notably, he led a significant initiative in Kosovo, helping prepare government institutions for independence.
A former Fulbright scholar, Dardeli completed his undergraduate degree summa cum laude from the University of Tirane and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University, alongside a Juris Doctor from the Catholic University of America. His extensive background provides a solid foundation for the future endeavors of IREX.
In his first remarks as incoming president, Dardeli highlighted, "IREX has rich experience in transforming educational systems, connecting people to tackle challenges, and supporting leaders across sectors. I am excited to work alongside our employees, board, and supporters worldwide to expand opportunities, create innovative solutions, and ultimately achieve lasting impact for both America and the communities we serve."
