IBIS2 Drone Revolutionizes Sewer Inspection in Saga City, Japan

Saga City Conducts First Internal Sewer Inspection with IBIS2 Drone

Saga Prefecture has taken a significant step in urban maintenance by executing its inaugural internal sewer inspection using the cutting-edge IBIS2 drone. This pioneering initiative, carried out on October 9, 2025, was a collaborative effort involving Liberaware, a drone development company based in Chiba City, and Kyuden Drone Service (QDS) from Fukuoka City. They worked alongside BioTex, a local company in Saga City, to enhance the safety and efficiency of sewer inspections.

About IBIS2

The IBIS2 drone is one of the smallest drones globally, specifically designed for inspections in narrow, dark, and hazardous indoor spaces. The drone's unique capability allows it to operate effectively in challenging environments, capturing high-resolution footage which aids in assessing the conditions of infrastructure that are often difficult to inspect with traditional methods.

\- Weight: 243g (including battery)
\- Manufactured in: Japan

Background of the Inspection

The Saga City Waterworks Bureau is committed to ensuring the safety and peace of mind of its citizens through systematic inspections, maintenance, and repairs of sewer pipes. As the risk of corrosion and damage is particularly high in certain areas, regular inspections are essential. This new approach involving the IBIS2 drone represents a shift towards adopting advanced, precise inspection methods.

By utilizing this innovative technology, the city aims not only to confirm the internal conditions of sewer lines but also to advance future maintenance strategies. The initiative is expected to provide critical insights into the integrity of the sewer system, enhancing its sustainability and reducing risks associated with infrastructure failure.

Roles of Participating Organizations

  • - Saga City: Responsible for identifying issues and conducting the inspection
  • - Liberaware: Developed, manufactured, and supported the actual drone operations
  • - QDS: Provided drone operations and on-site assistance
  • - BioTex: Offered on-site support and recommended inspection techniques

Details of the Recent Inspection

The inspection focused on a 270-meter-long sewer line with a diameter of 1.2 meters located in the Kamino area of Saga City. Equipped with advanced operational features, the IBIS2 can communicate through radio relays to fly stably even in areas where GPS signals are weak. This capability enabled the acquisition of detailed footage in previously inaccessible sections.

The footage captured allows inspectors to evaluate conditions such as corrosion, cracks, and sediment buildup, which will significantly inform future maintenance planning. Additionally, this technology is expected to increase safety for workers and reduce inspection times.

Visual Insights and 3D Modeling

Recent efforts also included creating 3D models using point cloud data obtained during inspections, showcasing the potential of integrating drone technology with advanced data processing methods.

Commentary from Saga City Waterworks Bureau

A representative from the Saga City Waterworks Bureau stated, "As aging sewer infrastructure poses significant challenges nationwide, integrating efficient and safe inspection methods is a priority. By employing cutting-edge drone technology, we can conduct detailed inspections more safely and effectively. We are committed to exploring new technologies to ensure the integrity of vital infrastructure that supports our citizens' lives."

Looking Ahead

The recent internal sewer inspection has affirmed the effectiveness of the IBIS2 drone in confined spaces. Liberaware, QDS, and BioTex are dedicated to continuously enhancing the implementation of drone-assisted inspection techniques, leveraging feedback from field operators to improve their services, technology development, and societal impact.
