Celebrating Eight Years of Clean Water Access in Kenya

On September 5, 2025, as the world observes the United Nations' International Day of Charity, Waterdrop Filter and The Water Project are proud to highlight eight years of collaborative efforts aimed at providing clean and safe drinking water to communities in western Kenya. This partnership exemplifies a commitment to sustainable development and the fundamental human right to clean water.

The Beginning of Our Journey

The collaboration began in 2016 when Waterdrop Filter’s leadership recognized the severe water crisis affecting sub-Saharan Africa. In response to this pressing issue, the company launched the Water4Smile initiative in 2017. This initiative pledged that every water purifier sold would ensure one day of clean water for a child in need. Partnering with The Water Project was a strategic move, allowing Waterdrop Filter to further its mission to promote access to safe water for everyone.

Impact on Communities

Over the past eight years, the partnership has evolved from isolated project sponsorships to a broader program that reflects their lasting dedication to community empowerment. The Water Project reported that it has now helped over 900,000 individuals in western Kenya gain access to clean and reliable water through the construction of over 2,600 water facilities, with an impressive 96% functionality rate.

This achievement not only transforms lives but also fosters hope and resilience within communities. At Kakoyi Primary School, for example, a 13-year-old student named Angel expressed how the introduction of a new water source will alleviate her family’s burden of expenses due to waterborne diseases. She stated, "The new water source will help our parents save their resources because we will not be suffering from waterborne diseases anymore. Teachers will also have more time with students because we no longer have to leave school to fetch water."

A Call for Action

Philip, the President of Waterdrop Filter, addressed the significance of this milestone, stating, "On this International Day of Charity, we are reminded that clean water is not only a basic human need but also a foundation for dignity, education, and equality. Our eight-year journey with The Water Project proves that consistent charitable action can transform communities and create lasting change."

This statement underscores the belief that access to clean water directly contributes to the overall well-being and educational success of children, acting as a catalyst for community development.
