The Soaring Costs of Trucking Congestion on U.S. Highways in 2022

In a recent report by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), 2022 saw the trucking industry in the United States grappling with unprecedented congestion costs that soared to $108.8 billion. This staggering figure marks a significant increase of 15% from the previous year, emphasizing the ongoing challenges faced by the trucking sector due to traffic delays on highways.

ATRI's Cost of Congestion analysis, which integrates data from various sources including a comprehensive database of truck GPS and operational cost benchmarks, examined the impact of delays on major U.S. roadways. Although the total hours of congestion saw a slight decrease in 2022 compared to the all-time highs of 2021, the costs associated with operating trucks escalated dramatically during this period.

The analysis reveals that these delays are equivalent to more than 430,000 commercial truck drivers losing an entire year of work. On average, each registered combination truck incurred an added expense of $7,588 due to traffic congestion. The traditional cargo hauler routes in the top ten states were particularly affected, each experiencing costs exceeding $8 billion. Texas emerged as the leader in costs at $9.17 billion, followed closely by California at $8.77 billion and Florida at $8.44 billion, collectively accounting for over half (52%) of the national total.

Furthermore, the most congested metropolitan areas included New York City, which alone faced $6.68 billion in added costs, followed by Miami and Chicago, with costs of $3.20 billion and $3.14 billion, respectively. ATRI's analysis found that the trucking sector wasted over 6.4 billion gallons of diesel fuel, leading to an additional cost burden of $32.1 billion in fuel expenses due to congestion.

The implications of these findings resonate widely, as Frank Granieri, COO of A. Duie Pyle Supply Chain Solutions, notes that rising operational costs pose significant challenges for businesses and consumers alike. He emphasizes the importance of minimizing delays caused by congestion, which can severely affect supply chain efficiencies and overall economic performance. The report calls for a collaborative effort to modernize infrastructure to support a resilient and efficient transportation network critical for the economy.

As the trucking industry continues to navigate these turbulent waters marked by increasing congestion costs, innovative solutions and strategic improvements in infrastructure are essential. By addressing these challenges head-on, stakeholders can hope to reduce the burden on logistics operations while simultaneously fostering a more robust supply chain capable of meeting the demands of a fluctuating market.
