Ericsson's AIR 3255 Massive MIMO Radios Enhance DOCOMO's 5G Network Performance

Ericsson has officially launched its AIR 3255 Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios in collaboration with Japanese telecommunications leader NTT DOCOMO. These cutting-edge radios are set to operate within DOCOMO's expansive 5G network, specifically in the 4.5 GHz band, launching in December 2025. This development comes as part of DOCOMO's ongoing efforts to enhance service quality in high-traffic areas, a vital step towards managing the surging demand for mobile connectivity.

Masafumi Masuda, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of DOCOMO's Radio Access Network Design Department, emphasized the importance of this technological upgrade. The deployment of the AIR 3255 radios, tailored for Massive MIMO configurations, is integral to preserving and even boosting network performance amid escalating traffic loads. He stated, "We are promoting the deployment of Massive MIMO radios to maintain and improve network quality amid increasing traffic demand. Ericsson's AIR 3255 radios are crucial for our aim to deliver top-tier services to our customers."

One of the standout features of the AIR 3255 is its state-of-the-art Ericsson Silicon technology, which significantly enhances energy efficiency. In fact, the new radios boast a 25% reduction in energy consumption and a 20% decrease in their embodied carbon footprint, when compared to earlier models. This eco-friendly upgrade is increasingly vital, aligning with global sustainability goals in technology development.

Weight efficiency is another critical advantage of the AIR 3255. Weighing in at just 13 kg, these radios are 20% lighter than their predecessors, making installation smoother even in densely populated urban environments where network density is a factor. The incorporation of advanced features like multi-user MIMO further enhances the user experience by ensuring stable throughput levels, regardless of network congestion.

Ericsson's AIR 3255 radios not only meet current demands but also equip the network for more efficient data traffic management in the future. When paired with DOCOMO's existing 3.7 GHz band Massive MIMO radios, this integration allows for more flexible and reliable network operations, ultimately leading to improved service quality for end-users.

Chafic Nassif, who serves as the Senior Vice President and Head of Ericsson North East Asia, expressed confidence in the partnership with DOCOMO. He remarked, "We are proud to reinforce our collaboration with DOCOMO through the provision of highly advanced and secure Massive MIMO technology. Our commitment is to deliver substantial network performance improvements while also supporting environmental sustainability initiatives."

As telecommunications solutions advance, the strategic deployment of the AIR 3255 signifies Ericsson's commitment to addressing evolving network traffic needs while enhancing environmental stewardship. This technical leap is not just a win for DOCOMO, but all users who will benefit from seamless connectivity, an assurance of better service standards, and a notable reduction in the environmental impact attributable to mobile networks. As Ericsson continues to innovate, the collaboration with DOCOMO sets a precedent for future developments in the telecommunications industry.
