Waseda University's History Museum

Waseda University, located in the heart of Tokyo, is delighted to announce part of its permanent exhibition at the Waseda University History Museum will be renewed on March 16, 2026. The museum operates under the auspices of the university and aims to enrich the visitor experience by presenting the university’s journey across past, present, and future through a variety of engaging displays.

Visitor Engagement and Milestones

The History Museum has reached a remarkable milestone, welcoming over 300,000 visitors since its opening. It houses a treasure trove of over 5 million items, including two national treasures, seven important cultural properties, and eight significant works of art. Visitors are encouraged to explore these invaluable cultural assets, which are made accessible to the public, students, and the greater community.

Since opening its doors on March 18, 2018, as the third museum on campus, after the Tsunopune Memorial Theater Museum and the Aizu Yaichi Memorial Museum, the History Museum reflects Waseda's commitment to preserving and sharing its cultural heritage. Each subsequent year has seen the addition of new museums on campus, including the Waseda Sports Museum and the International Literature Museum featuring Haruki Murakami’s library, solidifying Waseda's vision of transforming its campus into a comprehensive museum space.

New Exhibition Highlights

The upcoming exhibit refresh focuses on enhancing the timeline of university history while showcasing the evolution of the campus itself. Featured prominently at the entrance of the permanent exhibition will be inspirational quotes from the university's founder, Shigenobu Okuma. These quotes express the underlying philosophies related to education, scholarship, and societal contribution, setting the tone for an enriching educational experience.

In addition to showcasing the various faculties within the university, the exhibit also provides insight into student life and academic research initiatives. This allows visitors to grasp the breadth of Waseda University’s history, character, and vibrant legacy that continues to thrive and inspire future generations.
