FOTON Motor and COSCO SHIPPING Launch New Automotive Shipping Model for Global Trade

New Automotive Shipping Integration Model

On March 26, 2026, a significant milestone was achieved in the automotive and shipping sectors as FOTON Motor and COSCO SHIPPING officially announced the launch of their joint venture, Guangzhou Yuanfu Automotive Supply Chain Co., Ltd. This collaboration signifies a transformative moment for the companies as they aim to reshape the logistics landscape for automotive exports.

The joint venture was celebrated with the delivery of a newly equipped roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel, marking the beginning of their first major export initiative—shipping 600 FOTON pickup trucks to South America. This event not only highlights the capabilities of FOTON Motor in vehicle manufacturing but also demonstrates the synergy between automotive production and maritime logistics. The collaboration intends to establish an independent and efficient global supply chain, allowing FOTON to transition from merely exporting products to implementing a more integrated global strategy.

FOTON Motor has long been recognized for its excellence in commercial vehicle sales, maintaining the No.1 rank for overseas sales among Chinese brands for the past 15 years. In 2025 alone, it sold over 164,500 vehicles internationally, totaling more than 1.25 million units sold across more than 140 countries and regions. As global trade conditions become increasingly uncertain, the joint venture presents a strategic response to volatility in freight rates and unforeseen delays in deliveries. By unifying the global shipping capabilities of COSCO SHIPPING with FOTON’s robust export volume, this partnership seeks to leverage each company’s strengths to enhance operational efficiencies and customer satisfaction.

Zhu Youfu, Vice President of FOTON Motor, articulated the necessity of this joint venture, emphasizing that it was a strategic choice made as the company’s international business expanded. He expressed confidence that the collaboration will yield improved shipment reliability and lower costs through customizable maritime logistics services aimed at both finished vehicles and knock-down (KD) parts.

Zhang Chi, Deputy General Manager of COSCO SHIPPING, reinforced the partnership's innovative nature, stating that it sets a new benchmark for how the automotive and shipping industries can work together for mutual benefit. This synchronized approach to manufacturing, shipping, and logistics not only enhances FOTON Motor’s global reach but also presents a replicable model for other Chinese automotive enterprises aiming to extend their footprint internationally.

In addition to logistical advancements, this collaboration is poised to bolster the firm’s strategic planning capabilities, making it better equipped to navigate the complexities of international trade. By ensuring core shipping capacities are secured, FOTON will enhance its position in the market while providing a competitive edge to its offerings abroad.

This joint venture paves the way for a new type of automotive logistics, where the integration of shipping processes right from production to delivery acts as a cornerstone for future growth. As automotive markets evolve, FOTON and COSCO SHIPPING’s venture exemplifies a forward-thinking approach, setting a template for sustainable and efficient operations in the global automotive supply chain.

The launch of this innovative model marks just the beginning of FOTON’s ambitious plans for global integration. As they continue to expand their international operations, this initiative will serve as a benchmark for future collaborations in the ever-changing landscape of automotive exports and logistics management.
