Armadillo Launches Stylish New Showroom in New York City, Merging Heritage Architecture with Modern Design

Armadillo's New Showroom in New York

Armadillo has officially opened its highly anticipated showroom in New York City, spanning 4,000 square feet and designed to reflect the brand's evolving design philosophy. Nestled on Broadway with a view of Madison Square Park, this new space represents the Australian-born rug brand's most ambitious venture yet, creating an oasis of calm amid the vibrant energy of the city.

A Harmonious Blend of Old and New

The design of the showroom was crafted in collaboration with the Klein Agency, longstanding creative partners of Armadillo. The structure maintains the historical integrity of its 1897 roots, retaining original pine flooring, columns, and mouldings as tactile reminders of the past, while adopting contemporary design elements. The contoured walls, finished in textured plaster, juxtapose the building's heritage with a fresh aesthetic.

"Our aim was to honor the building's history while introducing a distinctly modern rhythm," expressed Jodie Fried, co-founder of Armadillo. This careful blend of craftsmanship aims to create a space where the rugs are not merely products but are instead living works of art.

Natural Light & Sculptural Design

The New York showroom allows natural light to cascade in from the streets, illuminating the tonal surfaces and creating a captivating interplay of shadows and textures. As the day goes on, the rugs come alive, revealing their depths and hues under the varying lights. Maša Kleinhample, Founding Partner of Klein Agency, noted that the showroom was designed to encourage intuitive movement through the space, inviting visitors to discover inspiration at every turn.

Thoughtful Details and Artful Simplicity

Each design decision in the showroom has been made to highlight Armadillo's connections within the design community. For instance, furniture from AUDO Copenhagen grounds the space with simplicity and elegance, while drapery from Everhem introduces softness. The ethereal glow from the pendant lighting by Lumiere Shades highlights the rich patina of the walls, painted by Bauwerk Paint, recognized for its sustainability initiatives.

Sally Pottharst, co-founder of Armadillo, commented on the significance of this location as more than just a showroom. "It is a place for pause and connection that reflects our core values of material honesty and craftsmanship,” she said.

A Collaborative Moment

In conjunction with the showroom opening, designer Romilly Newman will showcase her unique design sensibilities, marking her first collaboration with Armadillo. Her approach to styling connects the building's historical character with Klein Agency's modern elements. Romantic and neoclassical details, such as furnishings from Nickey Kehoe and lighting from Louis Poulsen, add warmth to the refined ambiance of the showroom.

Furthermore, decor items like crystal vases from Lalique, antiques from Sylvie Home, and airy linens from Cultiver, enrich the space with texture and charm. The overhead presence of birdcages by Rachel Wolf introduces a subtle sculptural element, while a signature scent by Diptyque completes the enriching atmosphere.

An Expanding Global Footprint

The new showroom is open Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and is part of Armadillo's growing global presence, which already includes locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide. Each showroom is designed as a meditative space, where beauty, integrity, and timeless craftsmanship converge.

Armadillo invites everyone to experience this new space, blending historical reverence with modern design innovation—creating an environment that celebrates the artistry inherent in each of its rugs.
