Akita Northern Happinets' Sustainable Initiative
On March 1, 2026, the resource collection station dubbed 'Mottainai BOX' is scheduled for a significant renovation. This revitalization is a joint effort between
NEWSCON, a pivotal player in resource circulation, and
Akita Material Co., enhancing the club's sustainable development goals (SDGs) through local partnerships. NEWSCON has been a collaborative partner of the Akita Northern Happinets since June 2023, aiming to promote environmental sustainability within the community.
Background of the Renovation
Since its inception, the initiative has aimed at fostering resource circulation, contributing positively to the local society. The merging of efforts with Akita Material Co. will not only strengthen these recycling operations but also add an essential item to the collection: used clothing. This addition aims to minimize waste by redirecting resources back into circulation instead of incineration.
Key Changes Following the Renovation
1.
Enhanced Partnership Structure
NEWSCON is delegating the operational management of the 'Mottainai BOX' to Akita Material Co., a knowledgeable local partner well-versed in resource recycling. This collaboration will optimize collection operations and elevate service quality, making it easier for community members to participate.
2.
Inclusion of Used Clothing in Collection Items
In addition to existing collection items such as cardboard, magazines, newspapers, and metals, the new program will facilitate the collection of used clothing. By introducing this new category, the initiative will help reduce disposal by allowing residents to recycle textiles effectively.
3.
New and Relocated Stations
A new station is set to open in Nikaho City at Akita Material's 'Kurukuru Shop', relocating operations previously hosted in Katagami City, which will close by the end of December 2025. This shift is designed to optimize the operational area and enhance accessibility for users.
How 'Mottainai BOX' Works
The Mottainai BOX station generates revenue from recycling, with a portion funneled back into the Akita Northern Happinets' community activities. Local residents, also known as boosters, are encouraged to drop off their recyclable materials at any time. However, during the winter months, operations may be temporarily paused due to snow. This daily act of recycling contributes not only to supporting the club but also to environmental conservation efforts.
